BS EN ISO 3183 Technical Guide and PDF Download

ISO 3183 is an international standard that specifies requirements for the manufacture of two product specification levels (PSL 1 and PSL 2) of seamless and welded steel pipes for use in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries.

BS EN ISO 3183 Technical Guide

The standard covers the following aspects of the pipeline transportation systems:

1. Pipe manufacturing process
2. Chemical composition and mechanical properties of the steel used
3. Pipe dimensions, weights, and tolerances
4. Pipe coatings and lining
5. Inspection and testing requirements

ISO 3183 is maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is regularly updated to reflect changes in technology and industry practices. The latest version of the standard is ISO 3183:2019.

ISO 3183:2019 is an international standard that specifies requirements for the manufacture of seamless and welded steel pipes for pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It serves as a supplement to API Spec 5L, 46th edition (2018), and provides additional requirements and exceptions for the manufacture of such pipes.

The standard defines terms and definitions consistent with API Spec 5L and refers to ISO and IEC terminological databases for use in standardization. The general requirements specified in API Spec 5L, 46th edition (2018) apply, with supplements and exceptions specified in sections 4.2 to 4.4 of the standard.

ISO 3183 is a standard for the transportation of natural gas and petroleum products by pipeline. The latest version of the standard can be purchased and downloaded directly from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) website. We attached here free download also.

Supplements to API Spec 5L

ISO 3183 pipe can be named and marked in accordance with section 4.4.2, and if no exceptions to API Spec 5L are taken and the pipe conforms to both standards, it can be named API 5L pipe and marked in accordance with section 4.4.3. Additionally, Annex A shall be applied for PSL 2 pipe ordered for European onshore natural gas transmission pipelines.

In addition to the requirements of API Spec 5L, 46th edition (2018), Clause 7, the purchase order for pipe manufactured according to this document shall also include confirmation if Annex A of this document is applicable and marking requirements according to section 4.4.

Marking

The standard provides two marking options, as described in section 4.4.2 and 4.4.3. Manufacturers may apply additional markings, provided they do not interrupt the sequence of required markings or comply with a separate marking requirement in the purchase order.

In summary, ISO 3183:2019 provides supplementary requirements and exceptions for the manufacture of steel pipes for pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries, and serves as a supplement to API Spec 5L, 46th edition (2018). The standard includes requirements for marking and information to be supplied by the purchaser to ensure proper identification and compliance.

Pipe marked as ISO 3183

The section 4.4.2 of ISO 3183 provides the guidelines for pipe markings for pipes that conform to this document. The markings should include the name or mark of the manufacturer, “ISO 3183” if the product conforms to this document, specified outside diameter, specified wall thickness, steel grade (steel name) as per API Spec 5L, product specification level designation followed by the letter G, type of pipe, mark of purchaser’s inspection representative (if applicable), identification number (if applicable), and the word “TESTED” with specified test pressure (if applicable) if the hydrostatic test pressure is higher than the standard pressure specified in API Spec 5L or if it exceeds the pressures stated in API Spec 5L notes a, b, or c in Table 26.

The steel grade should be marked immediately after the order item steel grade, and both corresponding SI and USC steel grades may be marked on the pipe if agreed. If Annex A is specified, the steel grade includes the suffix E. If the pipe also meets the requirements of compatible standard ABC (inserted as agreed), then the markings should include the name of the compatible standard in addition to ISO 3183.

Examples of pipe markings are provided in the section, including examples with hydrotest pressure and markings with both corresponding steel grades and application of API Spec 5L, 46th edition (2018), Annex G indicated.

Pipe marked as API 5L (with monogram option) and the additional marking of
“ISO 3183

The section you provided is related to the marking requirements for pipes that are marked as API 5L (with monogram option) and have the additional marking of “ISO 3183.”

According to API Spec 5L, 46th edition (2018), 11.2 and 11.1.4, the additional marking of “ISO 3183” shall be in accordance with the specified examples provided in the standard. These examples illustrate the format for marking pipes using SI and USC units with and without Annex A.

If a dual certification with Annex A is required, the pipe must meet the requirements of both standards. Therefore, it is recommended to review the requirements of Annex A with the requirements of API Spec 5L to ensure that all requirements are met.

In summary, the marking requirements for pipes marked as API 5L (with monogram option) and the additional marking of “ISO 3183” must follow the guidelines provided in API Spec 5L, including the specific format for marking as illustrated in Examples 1 to 4.
