This standard specifies the properties and testing methods for air-entraining admixtures, including requirements for air content, time of setting, and compressive strength. It is intended to ensure that air-entraining admixtures used in concrete production meet the necessary performance requirements to produce durable and high-quality concrete.

The ASTM C260 specification provides guidelines for the sampling of air-entraining admixtures for concrete, which are used to increase the durability and workability of concrete by introducing tiny air bubbles into the mixture. The specification stipulates that the purchaser must be given the opportunity to carefully sample and inspect the admixtures at either the point of manufacture or the work site, as specified by the purchaser.

The samples must be either “grab” samples, obtained in a single operation, or “composite” samples, obtained by combining three or more grab samples. The reason for taking samples may vary, but for quality tests, composite samples must be used, which are representative of the entire lot of admixture. For uniformity tests, composite samples may also be used to compare different lots from the same source, while grab samples are sufficient when evaluating the uniformity of a single lot.

For liquid air-entraining admixtures, the samples must represent no more than 9500 liters (2500 gallons) of admixture and must be agitated thoroughly before sampling. The grab samples must come from different locations well distributed throughout the quantity to be represented, and at least three grab samples must be taken. Composite samples should be prepared by mixing the grab samples thoroughly and providing at least 4 liters (1 gallon) of admixture for quality tests.

For non-liquid air-entraining admixtures, grab samples must represent no more than 2 metric tons (2 tons) of admixture and must have a mass of at least 1 kg (2 lb). A minimum of four grab samples must be taken from different locations well distributed throughout the quantity to be represented. Composite samples should be prepared by thoroughly mixing the grab samples and providing at least 2.5 kg (5 lb) of admixture for the composite sample.

All samples should be packaged in impermeable, airtight, and moisture-proof containers that are resistant to attack by the admixture. Samples must also be thoroughly mixed before testing to ensure uniformity, and the entire sample of non-liquid admixture must be dissolved in water before testing if recommended by the manufacturer.
