ASTM C496 PDF FREE DOWNLOAD AND FULL TECHNICAL GUIDE

ASTM C 496 is a standard test method used to determine the compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimens. It involves applying a compressive load to a cylindrical concrete specimen at a constant rate until the specimen fails, and then calculating the compressive strength of the concrete based on the maximum load sustained by the specimen and its cross-sectional area. This test method is commonly used in construction projects to ensure that the concrete used meets the required strength specifications for the intended application.

ASTM C496 SUMMARY OF TEST METHOD

ASTM C496 is a standardized test method used to determine the compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimens. The test method involves preparing cylindrical concrete specimens, either cast in place or molded in accordance with standardized procedures. These specimens are then tested using a compression testing machine to measure their compressive strength.

The compressive strength of the concrete specimen is calculated by dividing the maximum load sustained by the specimen during the test by its average cross-sectional area. The test is conducted at a constant rate of loading without any shock applied.

The test method specifies procedures for preparing and handling concrete specimens, including placing the specimen on the lower bearing block of the compression testing machine and aligning it with the center of thrust of the spherically seated block. The test method also specifies the rate of loading and the conditions for curing and storing the specimens prior to testing.

ASTM C496 provides a standardized procedure for testing the compressive strength of concrete, which is an important factor in determining the strength and durability of concrete structures. This test method is widely used in the construction industry to ensure the quality and safety of concrete structures.

ASTM C496 Test Procedure

The procedure for conducting the ASTM C496 test is as follows:

  1. Marking: Draw diametral lines on each end of the test specimen using a suitable device to ensure they are in the same axial plane. Alternatively, use an aligning jig.
  2. Measurements: Determine the diameter of the specimen to the nearest 0.01 inches by averaging three diameters measured near the ends and middle of the specimen. Determine the length of the specimen to the nearest 0.1 inches by averaging at least two length measurements taken in the plane containing the marked lines.
  3. Positioning: Center one of the plywood strips along the center of the lower bearing block. Place the specimen on the plywood strip and align so that the lines marked on the ends of the specimen are vertical and centered over the plywood strip. Place a second plywood strip lengthwise on the cylinder, centered on the lines marked on the ends of the cylinder. Position the assembly to ensure the projection of the plane of the two lines marked on the ends of the specimen intersects the center of the upper bearing plate. If a supplementary bearing bar or plate is used, position it so that it is directly beneath the center of the thrust of the spherical bearing block.
  4. Rate of Loading: Apply the load continuously and without shock, at a constant rate within the range of 100 to 200 psi/min until failure of the specimen. Record the maximum applied load indicated by the testing machine at failure. Note the type of failure and the appearance of the concrete.

The test measures the splitting tensile strength of concrete cylinders with a diameter-to-length ratio of 2:1 or less. The maximum load divided by the average cross-sectional area of the specimen gives the unit compressive strength of the concrete. The test results provide information on the quality of concrete and can be used to evaluate its conformity with standards and specifications.
