This article is about Metal Building Design Considerations & Technical Requirements.
Metal Building Design Considerations & Requirements
- Metal Building design shall be according to the MBMA Metal Building Systems Manual.
- Rigid frames shall consist of tapered or uniform-depth solid web rafters rigidly connected to tapered or uniform-depth solid web columns. The basis for frame analysis shall be hinged at the column base. The frame shall provide a clear span capable of supporting bridge cranes and/or monorails with hoists as indicated on the drawings.
- End wall framing members shall consist of post and beam end frames and/or fully or partially loaded rigid frames. Buildings shall not be designed for future expansion unless indicated on the drawings.
- The roof purlin system shall provide continuity over the interior rigid frame rafters.
- Roof slope for all buildings shall be a 1 inch in 12 inches (“) unless specified otherwise on the contract drawings.
- The wall girt system shall be either flush or recess-mounted and shall be framed into the rigid frame and/or columns. The type of girt system is indicated on the Company drawings.
- Bracing of the structure shall be by means of diagonal bracing and/or portal columns and/or portal frames. Permissible braced bays are indicated on the Company drawings.
- Door, window, and other framed openings shall be designed to replace, structurally, the sidewall panels and/or the framing they displace.
- Buildings shall be designed for bearing directly on foundations without the use of grout beds.
- Foundation out-of-level tolerances as provided by Company will be 1/8 inch in 20 ft overall. Structural steel, such as building frames and bracing steel, shall be designed according to the AISC Manual of Steel Construction.
- Cold-formed sections, such as roof purlins and girt framing steel, shall be designed according to the AISI Cold Formed Steel Manual.
- Welding design shall be according to the AWS Code for Welding in Building Construction.
