Scope
This Guideline provides the specification criteria for acceptable performance
of the sample receiver mixer. The procedure specified in API MPMS Chapter
8.3 .B.5 – Acceptance Test for Closed Loop Mixing Systems shall be followed.
Frequency Quarterly.
RECEIVER MIXER HOMOGENIZATION TEST PROCEDURE
Procedure This procedure is based on the Karl Fischer coulometric mass method found
in API MPMS Chapter 10.9 for determining water content; however other
water test methods are acceptable. If other test methods are used, the size of
the sample for testing must be adjusted accordingly.
Baseline Determination
a. Place a predetermined volume of test liquid (crude oil) into the
sample container. This volume should be approximately 80% of the
receiver volume and accurately measured to the nearest cc.
b. Align the valves on the sample receiver with the circulation pump
and begin mixing. After 5 minutes and while the mixer is running
take 3 test volume and determine the baseline water concentration
to the nearest 0.01 %
Test for Known Water Content
a. Using a beaker and a weigh scale, weigh the required amount of
water to represent 1% water over the baseline factor. This can be
calculated as the volume of crude oil times the specific gravity of the
crude times 1%. This water addition can be measured as the
equivalent amount of grams on the weigh scale.
b. Add the water to the sample receiver, and let the water settle for 15
minutes before mixing.
c. After 5 minutes of mixing and while the mixing pump is running,
draw three test samples for analysis. Label these samples as 5
minutes and take another 3 samples at 10 minutes and 15 minutes
for a total of 3 sets of samples.
Analysis of test results
a. Test results can be calculated per Attachment A.1 of AP Chapter 10.9.
