SAES-L-132SAES-L-132 Material Selection for Piping Systems
According to the standard, the materials of construction for various piping systems are determined based on the fluid to be transported. This standard complements the requirements of piping codes such as ASME B31. The materials used in piping systems must meet specific chemical, mechanical, and dimensional properties as specified in this standard.
For gasket materials, you should refer to SAES-L-109, which provides the requirements for gaskets used in Saudi Aramco facilities.
For valves, you should refer to SAES-L-108, which outlines the specifications and requirements for valves used in Saudi Aramco facilities.
These additional standards provide specific guidelines and requirements for gaskets and valves to ensure their suitability and performance in the piping systems.
Material Selection for Piping System
According to the standard, the selection of materials for pipe and piping components should be based on the fluids and design conditions specified in Table 1. The listed materials in Table 1 are recommended for the corresponding service environments. However, equivalent or better materials may be used with the approval of the assigned Engineering Specialist in the Consulting Services Department. If the service conditions differ from those listed in Table 1, it is recommended to consult with the Engineering Specialist.
For further information on pipe classes, you should refer to SAES-L-105, which provides complementary information on pipe classes.
Carbon steel piping bends and welds, regardless of wall thickness, should undergo stress relief heat treatment in the range of 595 to 650°C for one hour for certain services as indicated in the remarks column of Table 1.
Materials used in wet, sour services described in SAES-L-133 must be resistant to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) as per the requirements of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for wet, sour services described in SAES-L-133, paragraph 6.2.1. Similarly, materials used in wet, sour services described in SAES-L-133, paragraph 6.2.2, must be resistant to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) as described in SAES-L-133, paragraph 7.2.2.
Specific components such as pipes, fittings, and flanges, when purchased in accordance with the corresponding Purchase Specifications (as mentioned in the standard), are considered resistant to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) or hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). If components are not purchased according to those specifications, they must meet the requirements of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sulfide stress cracking (SSC) or the requirements mentioned in the standard for hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC).
It is important to note that materials not meeting the specified requirements for wet, sour services where hydrogen-induced cracking or sulfide stress cracking is a possibility should not be used in such services.
