SAES-L-310SAES-L-310 Design of Plant Piping
This article SAES-L-310 serves as a supplement to the ASME B31 codes, which already provide design requirements for pressure piping. However, this standard defines additional minimum design requirements specifically for pressure piping located within plant areas. It sets forth specific guidelines and criteria that need to be followed for such piping systems.
It’s important to note that for specific plant piping systems, additional requirements may be outlined in other Saudi Aramco Piping Standards, as specified in SAES-L-100. These additional standards would cover the specific requirements and considerations related to those particular piping systems within the plant.
piping Design Package
The design of pressure piping located inside plant areas requires the preparation of several documents, which are listed below. These documents need to be assigned Saudi Aramco drawing numbers, following the guidelines provided in the Saudi Aramco Drafting Manual, and they become permanent plant records:
- Process Flow Diagram (PFD) or Utility Flow Diagram (UFD): This diagram illustrates the overall flow of the process or utility system and helps in understanding the piping layout.
- Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID): The P&ID provides a detailed representation of the piping system, including equipment, instruments, and control devices. It shows the interconnections between various components.
- Piping Designation Table (Saudi Aramco Form): This table lists the designated numbers for different piping components, which are used for identification and referencing purposes.
- Calculation sheets: These sheets support the major flow data and pressure drop calculations mentioned in the Piping Designation Table. They provide the necessary calculations and data for the design of the piping system.
- Safety Instruction Sheets (SIS): SIS documents are prepared for critical piping based on SAES-L-125. These sheets outline specific safety instructions and precautions for the operation and maintenance of critical piping systems.
- Piping Plan Drawings: These drawings present the layout of the piping system from a top-down perspective, showing the arrangement of piping routes, equipment, and major components. Details and sections are typically shown on separate drawings.
- Piping Section Drawings and details: These drawings provide detailed views of specific sections of the piping system, highlighting the arrangement and connection details.
- Isometric Piping Detail Drawing: Isometric drawings show the three-dimensional representation of the piping system, illustrating the pipe routing and connection details.
- Piping flexibility calculations: These calculations, as per SAES-L-120, evaluate the flexibility and stress analysis of the piping system to ensure that it can accommodate thermal expansion, contraction, and other operational forces.
- Hydrostatic Test Diagram: This diagram outlines the plan and procedure for conducting the hydrostatic pressure test of the piping system, including the test pressure, duration, and test sections.
- Pipe support and foundation location drawing: This drawing indicates the positions and locations of pipe supports and foundations within the piping system.
- Pipe support and anchor detail drawings: These drawings provide detailed information about the design and specifications of pipe supports and anchors used in the piping system.
- Valves operating diagram (VOD): VOD is prepared as required by the Operations department and illustrates the valve positions and operation sequences for the piping system.
- Project Scope of Work or Project Specifications: This document describes the scope of the project or specific specifications for the piping system, highlighting any special features or precautions to be taken, such as welding requirements, adjustment of spring hangers, cold spring, etc.
These documents collectively form the design package for pressure piping located inside plant areas, ensuring comprehensive documentation and adherence to design and safety standards.
Material Selection for Piping Components
When selecting materials for pressure piping components, the following requirements and standards specified by Saudi Aramco should be followed:
- Pipes, fittings, and gaskets: Material procurement for these components should comply with the Regulated Vendor List specified in SAES-L-101.
- Valves: Material procurement for valves should comply with the Regulated Vendor List specified in SAES-L-102.
- Material specification and line classes: Material specification and line classes should be in accordance with SAES-L-105.
- Line pipes and components: Material selection for line pipes and components should comply with SAES-L-132, SAES-L-133, and SAES-L-136.
- Valves selection: Valves selection for piping systems should be in accordance with SAES-L-108.
- Flanges, bolts, and gaskets: Flanges, bolts, and gaskets should comply with SAES-L-109.
- Non-metallic piping systems: Non-metallic piping systems should be designed and constructed following SAES-L-610 in addition to the applicable ASME B31 Code.
It is important to assign a material specification code in accordance with SAES-L-105 to each pressure piping system within a plant area.
It should be noted that specifying brand names or proprietary names does not exclude equivalent items offered by other manufacturers.
