SAES-L-410 Design of Pipelines

This standard SAES-L-410 provides additional requirements for the design of onshore and nearshore pipelines, including cross-country pipelines, flowlines, and trunklines. It complements the design requirements specified in ASME B31.4 and ASME B31.8 for pipelines.

While this standard is primarily intended for onshore and nearshore pipelines, it can also be applied to submarine and offshore pipelines, excluding requirements that are not technically applicable in those settings.

Furthermore, this standard is applicable to existing pipelines that are being converted from one specific service to another type of service. For instance, it covers pipelines that are converted from stabilized oil to sales gas, from sales gas to NGL (Natural Gas Liquids), and so on. These conversions involve modifying the pipeline’s purpose and potentially its operational conditions, and the standard provides guidance for such cases.

Pipeline Optimization Study

The pipeline optimization study is a crucial step in evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of a new pipeline. The study should be conducted no later than the Project Proposal stage and should include a comprehensive Life Cycle Cost Analysis. The following aspects should be addressed at a minimum:

a) Determining the appropriate pipe diameter, wall thickness, and material type and grade.

b) Evaluating the pipeline routing and selecting the optimal construction method (e.g., aboveground or buried) considering their impact on initial capital costs, operation, and maintenance expenses.

c) Classifying the pipeline area based on safety and environmental considerations.

d) Assessing the maximum allowable operating pressure, available inlet pressure, and minimum required delivery pressure.

e) Considering future expansion requirements and accommodating potential changes in demand. f) Evaluating the constructability of the pipelines, considering factors such as accessibility, terrain conditions, and potential construction challenges.

g) Determining the design flow rate and accounting for any velocity limitations imposed by the fluid composition and flow pattern, especially for multi-phase fluids.

h) Selecting appropriate pipeline materials with consideration for potential corrosion and erosion effects (refer to SAES-L-133).

It’s important to note that production pipelines in gas or crude may not always require a detailed pipeline optimization study. In such cases, it is recommended to consult the Production & Facilities Development Department of E&P, as they are responsible for the development of these pipelines and can provide guidance.

Additionally, pipeline hydraulic studies should be conducted as needed, following the guidelines outlined in SAEP-363, to ensure the hydraulic performance and integrity of the pipeline system.
