- No Open Flames: Avoid using open flames in or around a manhole or over a manhole cover. The presence of a combustible mixture in the manhole can lead to an explosion.
- Avoid Striking Seated Covers: Sparks can be hazardous, so never strike a seated cover directly with a steel or iron implement.
