4.1 Lead sheath splice closures are prohibited as Saudi Aramco no longer uses lead sheath cables for new constructions.

4.2 Thermo fit (heat shrinkable) wrap-around sleeves are available for cable sheath repairs and can be used as splice closures for new cable constructions.

4.3 When working with encapsulating compounds, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s warnings, safety precautions, and all applicable Saudi Aramco safety standards and instructions.

4.4 All direct buried or underground cable splice closures must be filled with a reenterable encapsulating compound. It is essential to consider the heat requirements for the installation of heat-shrinkable sleeves and closures. Proper location selection, adherence to safety precautions, and compliance with Loss Prevention standards are necessary. Installations should be carried out following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Design

Here are the design specifications related to communication cable splice closures as mentioned in SAES-T-633:

5.1 Splice cases equipped to receive encapsulating compound should only be used for aerial and inside building cables.

5.2 The Reddi Seal Cable Closure, manufactured by Preformed Line Products (PLP), is designed for use on filled cables in underground and buried plant splices. Whether used on filled or air core type cables and whether splices are buried or underground, the closure must be filled with a reenterable encapsulating compound. The Reddi Seal end plates are not interchangeable with pressurized Preformed Splice Case, and the installation should follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The Reddi Seal Cable Closure is available in three models (refer to Table 1).

5.4 Saudi Aramco uses splice cases for underground and buried cable splices, allowing the splice to be encapsulated.

5.5 In manhole installations of underground cables, the Preformed Stainless Steel Splice Closure or an equivalent non-filled type splice closure may be used. This type of installation may require an annual preventive maintenance program, including pressure testing of splice closures, to verify splice integrity. The installation materials and procedures should comply with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

5.6 All direct buried or underground cable splice closures, including air core and filled cables, must be filled with a re-enterable encapsulating compound. The splice closure used should be specifically designed to hold encapsulating compound. The Pressure Wrap Kit or a similar product with a perforated web liner should be used in all encapsulated re-enterable splice closures.

5.7 The 3M Company’s RJ Series Better Buried Closure system, available from a local vendor, is suitable for buried splices. With the 3M Brand RJ Series support assembly, these closures can also be used in manholes and cable vaults. The closure comes in various series and sizes, accommodating cables with outside diameters ranging from 25 mm to 101 mm. For filled closures with a diameter of 125 mm and larger installed in manholes, a support assembly is required.

5.8 The 3M Better Buried Closure system is made of material that withstands acids, detergents, chemicals, and other harmful elements, ensuring the integrity of direct buried splices. The system is available as complete closure kits, component kits, or individual parts to meet specific application requirements, including straight and butt splices, cable repair, tap splicing, and sheath repairs. Some materials are already listed on the SAMS stock list under the 18-021-xxx series of stock numbers.
