Telecommunications Cable Testing and Acceptance

SAES-T-634 standard focuses on the testing and acceptance of telecommunications cable and wire for quality assurance of new installations. It sets forth mandatory requirements to ensure that the cables and wires used in telecommunication systems meet the necessary quality standards. These requirements are aimed at verifying the performance and reliability of the cables and wires before they are accepted for installation. Adhering to SAES-T-634 helps to ensure that the telecommunication infrastructure deployed by Saudi Aramco meets the desired quality and performance standards.

Design

According to the SAES-T-634 standard, the following requirements are specified for the acceptance testing of telecommunications cable facilities:

5.1 Acceptance Testing – Cable Facility

  • Acceptance tests are required for new cables, additions, or rearrangements to existing cables in the following cases:
  • Adding 305 meters or more of cable
  • Altering the attenuation loss of a voice frequency circuit by more than -0.5 dB at 1004 Hz.
  • For cables with irregularities in a pair, two or more pairs in the same group should be checked.
  • If one or both pairs show irregularities, then all pairs in the group should be checked.
  • If 25% or more of the tested pairs show irregularities, then all pairs of the cable should be tested.
  • Exception: If all irregular pairs are confined to one group, only the pairs in that group need to be tested.

5.2 Responsibilities

  • Engineering is responsible for providing cable schematics, identifying special testing requirements, providing loss budget for fiber loops, and providing estimated measured loss and calculated resistance for E1 Repeater sections.
  • Outside Plant Construction is responsible for performing cable acceptance testing on all cables according to the SAES and any other specified tests, ensuring that all constructed facilities meet Saudi Aramco’s requirements, testing facility extensions, reporting cable troubles in existing cables, and repairing any identified troubles in new facilities.

5.3 Cable Facility Acceptance Test Requirements

  • Before a cable is designated for voice frequency (VF) or E1 digital transmission, standard cable acceptance testing procedures should be completed to verify DC and high-frequency acceptability.
  • All cable pairs, including POTS (Loaded & Unloaded), Special Service, and E1 digital on cable, should meet the minimum acceptance test requirements specified in Table 1.

These requirements ensure that cable facilities meet the necessary standards and performance criteria before they are accepted for voice frequency or digital transmission purposes.

it states that all POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) on loaded cable pairs only should meet the minimum Structural Return Loss (SRL) test requirements as specified in Table 2. The SRL test measures the amount of reflected energy or signal loss in the cable system. The specific requirements for the SRL test can be found in Table 2 of the SAES-T-634 standard. It is essential to ensure that the POTS on loaded cable pairs meet the minimum SRL requirements to maintain satisfactory performance and signal quality.

In section 5.3.3, all cable pairs, both on screened and non-screened cables used for E1 (digital transmission), must meet the minimum acceptance test requirements specified in Table 3. The acceptance test requirements outlined in Table 3 are applicable to E1 cables and ensure that the cable pairs meet the necessary criteria for satisfactory performance and signal transmission in E1 digital communication systems. It is important to conduct these acceptance tests and ensure compliance with the specified requirements to maintain the quality and reliability of the E1 communication infrastructure.

SAES-T-634 PDF - Telecommunications Cable Testing and Acceptance

As per section 5.3.4 of the SAES-T-634 standard, all fibers used in telecommunications cables must meet the acceptance test requirements outlined in Table 4 before establishing service. These acceptance tests are conducted to ensure the quality and performance of the fibers, verifying that they meet the specified criteria for reliable and efficient transmission of signals. Adhering to these acceptance test requirements is crucial to ensure the proper functioning of the fiber optic communication system and to deliver high-quality telecommunications services.
