1. PURPOSE

1.1 This engineering specification defines the minimum requirements for aluminum instrument pipe couplings and adapters.

2. scope

2.1 This specification applies to materials and dimensions of aluminum couplings and adapters for DN8 (NPS 1/4) instrument piping used in cold box design.

4. UNITS OF MEASURE

4.1 All pipe sizes are given in diameter nominal (DN) with nominal pipe sizes (NPS) given in parentheses.

4.2 All dimensions are given in millimeters (mm) with inches (in) in parentheses. Metric dimensions take precedence.

4.3 All pressures are given in bar gauge with pounds per square inch gauge (psig) in parentheses.

4.4 All temperatures are given in degrees Celsius (°C) with degrees Fahrenheit (°F) in parentheses.

5. general

5.1 Pressure testing is not required by this specification. Couplings and adapters within this specification have been designed to be capable of withstanding a hydrostatic test pressure as described in Section 10 of ASTM B 361.

5.2 Couplings and adapters are rated for a design pressure of 70 bar g (1015 psig) over the design temperature range.

5.3 Couplings and adapters design temperature range:  -212° to +65C (-350 to +150F).

6. MATERIALs

6.1 Adapters and couplings shall be made from aluminum bar or plate meeting the following requirements. Sections A, E, or M fittings shall be per Table 1 – Material Specification for Aluminum Bar or Plate (5083 or 5086). Equivalent ASME material grades may be substituted for materials specified as ASTM. Section C fittings shall be per Table 1A – Chinese Material Specification for Aluminum Bar or Plate (5083).

7. DIMENSIONS, TOLERANCES, AND END PREPARATION

7.1 Coupling and adapter dimensions, tolerances, and end preparation shall be in accordance with details D001 to D008. Socket-weld end dimensions shall be in accordance with ASME B16.11. Threaded connections shall be NPT in accordance with ASME B1.20.1.

8. INSPECTION, EXAMINATION, AND TESTING

8.1 Tees to detail D003 shall be subject to 100% dye penetrant examination on all external surfaces. No surface-breaking defects are acceptable.

8.2 All other items shall be 100% visually examined on all internal and external surfaces. No surface-breaking defects are acceptable.

9. MARKING

9.1 Marking shall be in accordance with 4WPI-M00001.

10. CLEANING AND PACKAGING

10.1 Each fitting shall be cleaned for oxygen service to meet the Class AA acceptance criteria of
4WPI-SW70003. After cleaning, fittings shall be sealed in a plastic bag and labeled, “Cleaned For Oxygen Service.”

10.2 Suitable packing shall be provided to ensure that all fittings arrive at their contractual point of delivery in an undamaged condition. Refer to the purchase order for specific packing standards and instructions.

11. DOCUMENTATION

11.1 Adapters and couplings shall de delivered with the following documentation: Material certifications are required for each heat number per purchase order. Material certification shall include actual chemicals and mechanical test data. A certificate of conformance shall be supplied for each purchase order, certifying that couplings and adapters meet the requirements of this specification. In Europe only, a test certificate Type 3.1B to EN 10204 shall be provided for the finished item.

11.2 Each purchase order shall be delivered with two sets of documents. One set shall be delivered with the fittings and the other shall be delivered to the originator of the purchase order.
