Calculus in Industrial Process Measurement and Control

Mathematicians work hard to make sure their studies of mathematics remain accurate and precise. They have a great respect for the rules and laws of their artificial world, which must be followed to keep the world intact. They take great care to make sure their work is done right, never allowing any mistakes or shortcuts.

Mathematicians make a lot of useful tools and techniques to study the artificial world that they created. Even though these tools and techniques are useful, they are not always used properly in the real world. People often take shortcuts and make mistakes when applying mathematical rules to real-world situations, which mathematicians would not approve of.

Mathematicians and linguists both strive to protect their respective rules and regulations. Mathematicians want to ensure that the rules of their artificial world are followed, while linguists want to make sure that the rules of language are respected. Most people, however, ignore the rules and take shortcuts when they use language or math. It all depends on which side you are on; the purists are offended by this disregard for the rules whereas the pragmatists find it useful.

I often tell my students that mathematics is just like another language. The more you understand mathematics, the more words you have to explain the things you see in the world. Being good at math also helps you to see connections between different things, which can be really helpful when learning new things.
