Cathodic Protection of Plant Facilities General Requirements

CP Design and Supervision

  • The cathodic protection (CP) of metallic structures in contact with soil or liquid requires expertise in the field of electrochemistry, structural engineering, and CP engineering.
  • The CP design engineer shall be a NACE (USA) CP specialist. The specialist’s professional experience shall be minimum ten (10) years in designing CP of tanks and pipelines/piping.
  • The engineer supervising the CP system’s installation, installation testing, energizing, commissioning and long-term operation and maintenance, shall be a NACE (USA) CP technologist or his experience shall be minimum seven (7) years in CP installation of tanks and pipelines/piping.

Warranty

    • The Contractor shall provide a written warranty of two (2) years for successful CP system operation after successful commissioning and final system acceptance.
    • The Contractor shall also provide a written warranty of five (5) years for all the components of CP system.
    • In the event of failure or under protection of CP system, malfunctioning or failure of any component, the contractor shall rectify the fault or replace the faulty component (including installation, excavation and backfilling work) by its own cost, and to the satisfaction of the SABIC STC.

Materials and Testing

Wherever possible, all equipments and components within the system shall be listed by the certified testing laboratory such as Underwriters laboratories (UL) and shall carry the laboratory labels. The Cathodic Protection system material and equipment shall be supplied and tested in accordance with the applicable sections of the latest edition of the Engineering Standards.

Manufacturer’s Procedures

In addition to the standards referenced in section 2, the Client approved anode and transformer rectifier manufacturer’s own recommended installation, materials standards and procedures shall be recognized as part of this standard.

Health and Safety

Work associated with CP of structures in contact with soil or water shall comply with Health and Safety Procedures, SASO SSA 336 and OSHA 29CFR 1910. Work permits shall be obtained from respective authorities when necessary.
