1. Purpose
American Petroleum Institute (API) Standard 610, Eight Edition, August 1995 is adapted as a SABIC
Engineering Standard with the following addendum.
2. General
2.1 Pumps manufactured to this standard shall conform to API 610, Eighth Edition except as modified
herein, or as set forth on the Data Sheets, Project Specifications or by the Purchase order.
3. Addenda
The following section/paragraph numbers refer to API 610, Eighth Edition.
Section 1 – General
1.1 Scope
1.1.3. An exception to the requirement is as follows:
The following pump configurations are not acceptable:
a. Two or more stages, overhung
b. Double suction, overhung
c. Close coupled (impeller mounted on motor shaft)
d. Multistage ring-section single casing
1.1.5 Add the following new paragraph:
Pumps shall be supplied by the vendors qualified by experience in manufacturing the proposed units. To
qualify, the vendor shall have manufactured at least two (2) pumps of comparable size, model, power
rating, speed in the similar service as indicated in the individual specification and Data Sheets. These
pumps shall have completed at least 8000 h of continuous operation satisfactorily.
1.3 Conflicting Requirements
Add the following sentence:
Any conflict between this standard and another contract or procurement documents, unless specifically
indicated as an exception, shall be resolved at the discretion of SABIC.
1.4 Definition of Terms
1.4.41 Modify ‘Purchaser’ to ‘SABIC’. This change is applicable throughout API 610.
1.4.58 Add the following new term:
Inspector – The authorized representative of SABIC has authority to act on behalf of SABIC
in all quality assurance matters.
1.5 Referenced Publications
1.5.1 Add the following standards to A.1 in Appendix A.

Section 2 – Basic Design
2.1 General
2.1.4 Add the following sentence:
All impellers shall have a diameter at least 5 percent larger than the minimum to reduce suction
recirculation, (which can lead to increased NPSHR), and not more than 95 percent of maximum to provide
for reserve performance and maximum interchangeability of application.
2.1.8 Add the following paragraphs:
The minimum continuous stable flow rating shall be indicated on the pump curves in addition to the NPSHR
at this point.
Minimum continuous flow specified for a service shall be higher than the following:
a. Minimum continuous thermal flow
b. Minimum continuous stable flow
c. Minimum flow at which bearings and shaft has minimum rated life.
2.1.9 Add the following sentence:
Pumps with suction specific speed greater than 11,000 U.S. units shall require SABIC approval.
2.1.11 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Pumps shall have stable head capacity curves that continuously rise to shut off. The pump head at shut-off
shall be at least 110 percent of the head at rated capacity, unless otherwise approved by SABIC. Pumps for
parallel operation shall have equal head rise to shut-off. The use of a discharge orifice is only acceptable
with approval by SABIC.
2.1.12 Add the following sentence:
Proposals where minimum continuous flow is less than 15 percent of the rated flow or higher than
50 percent of the rated flow shall require SABIC approval.
2.1.14 Substitute the requirement as follows:
Control of the sound pressure level to meet specified requirements shall be the sole responsibility of the
vendor. Unless otherwise specified, the maximum sound level shall be 85 dBA at 1 m from the equipment
surface. See SES G20-S01.
2.1.17 Add the following sentences:
The vendor shall indicate on the pump Data Sheet, cooling requirements, if any, for bearings, seal housing
and baseplate pedestals. The cooling plans shall be specified from Appendix-D. Special heating/cooling
arrangements shall require a sketch showing the arrangement.
2.1.26 Modify the second sentence as follows:
The vendor shall be fully responsible for corrective actions and costs if the pump fails to meet the
performance requirements during the warranty period while handling the specified liquid under the
conditions as stated on the Data Sheet.
2.1.29 Add the following paragraphs:
Unless otherwise specified, pumps and auxiliaries shall be designed for operation in unprotected outdoor
installation. As a minimum, following provisions shall be included:
a. Dust seal or cover.
b. Filter for breather or vent cap.

2.1.30 Add the following new paragraph:
Inducers may be provided on integral gear driven pumps (type OH6) and when specified on the Data
Sheets.
2.1.31 Add the following new paragraph:
If a warm up period is required before a pump can be fully loaded to reduce thermal shock, the vendor
shall state so in his proposal.
2.1.32 Add the following new paragraph:
Multistage pumps without ‘balanced oppose’ impeller arrangements shall have ‘balancing piston/drum’
arrangements. Other axial thrust balancing devices like ‘balancing disk’ shall require SABIC approval.
2.2.4 Modify the first sentence as follows:
The maximum allowable working pressure shall apply to all parts referred to in the definition of pressure
casing, except for vertically suspended double casing pumps.
2.2.7 Add the following sentence:
Horizontal pumps with radially split casings shall be designed to permit the removal of the complete
rotating assembly from one end of the pump.
2.2.14 Add the following new paragraph:
Multistage volute type pumps shall have each volute oriented 180 degrees from the preceding volute.
2.2.15 Add the following new paragraph:
Where double volute construction results in an internal liquid trap, a drain hole shall be provided at the low
point of the inner volute to permit complete drainage of the volute section.
2.2.16 Add the following new paragraph:
Pumps with double-suction impellers or with more than one impeller shall be of ‘between bearings’ design.
2.3 Nozzle and Pressure Casing Connections
2.3.2.5 Add the following sentence:
Flange bolt holes shall straddle the horizontal and vertical centerlines.
2.3.3.3 An exception to the requirement is as follows:
Cylindrical threads are not acceptable.
2.3.3.6 Add the following sentence:
Nipples shall be braced by means of gussets.
2.3.3.10 Add the following sentences:
Valved vent and drain connections shall be braced. The drain shall be routed to the edge of the baseplate
and shall permit complete drainage of the casing. Drain line shall be provided with a block valve and
terminate with a flanged connection.
2.3.3.12 Add the following new paragraph:
All casing connections shall be adequately reinforced to avoid any vibration reaching the casing joint.
2.5 Rotor
2.5.1 Modify the second sentence as follows:
Fabricated and open impellers shall require specific SABIC approval.
2.5.2 Modify the second sentence as follows:
Collet mounted impellers are acceptable only in water service below 70 °C, if the absorbed power per
stage does not exceed 75 kW (100 HP).

2.5.5 Add the following sentence:
Shaft sleeves for mechanically sealed pumps shall be hardened to 55 HRC under dynamic secondary
sealing elements.
2.5.11 Add the following new paragraph:
The shaft shall be designed to transmit momentarily at least four (4) times the rated torque of the pump
driver.
2.6 Wear Rings and Running Clearances
2.6.1 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Renewable front and back wearrings shall be furnished on both the casing and the impeller. Pumping
vanes shall not be used to establish axial balance.
2.7 Mechanical Shaft Seals
2.7.2 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Unless otherwise specified, mechanical seals shall be in accordance with SES G02-S01.
2.7.3 Add the following sentence:
For non API 682 seals, the following modifications to Section 2.7.3 shall apply.
2.7.3.3 Add the following sentence:
Unless otherwise specified, throttle bushings are required for all dual seals.
2.7.3.8 Add the following new item:
f. Hardened to 55 HRC under dynamic secondary sealing elements in contact with the pumped liquid.
2.7.3.14 Add the following sentence:
Seal gland plate connections shall be identified by stamping.
2.7.3.18 Add the following new items:
a. To increase or decrease seal-chamber pressure.
b. To control the flow in or out of the seal chamber.
2.7.3.21 Add the following sentence:
Auxiliary dry-running seals shall be capable of 25,000 h of operation in a gas or liquid environment at a
pressure up to the set point of the seal leakage detection pressure switch, and 500 h of operation in a liquid
environment up to the maximum seal chamber conditions.
2.7.3.24 Add the following new paragraph:
Chevron-type dynamic seals are unacceptable.
2.8 Dynamics
2.8.2.6 The decision is as follows:
The vendor shall furnish a detailed report of the analysis.
2.9 Bearings and Bearing Housings
2.9.1.2 Add the following sentences:
Pumps fitted with double suction impellers shall not exceed thrust bearing rated load due to partial loss of
flow in either suction eye. Hydrodynamic thrust bearing loading under normal operating conditions shall not
exceed 50 percent of the bearing manufacturer’s ultimate load rating.
2.9.1.6 Add the following new paragraph:
Thrust collars shall be replaceable and positively locked to the shaft.
2.9.2.2 Add the following sentence:
Additionally, Bulls Eye type direct oil level indicator shall be provided.

2.9.2.4 Add the following sentences:
Bearing oil shall be cooled by either air or water to maintain oil within the specified temperature limits. If
the pumping temperature exceeds 149 °C (300 °F) or heavy thrust loads are encountered, bearing oil shall
be cooled by water.
2.9.2.5 Add the following sentence:
All multistage horizontal pumps shall be furnished with steel inboard and outboard bearing housings.
2.9.2.6 Add the following sentence:
Unless otherwise specified, bearing housings shall be equipped with labyrinth type seals consisting of
noncontacting stator and rotor units. Alternate design shall require SABIC approval.
2.10 Materials
2.10.1.4 Add the following new item:
a. Cast iron impellers shall only be used in single-stage pumps.
2.10.2 Castings
2.10.2.3.1 Add the following paragraphs:
a. Major repairs to castings shall not be made without prior SABIC approval. Defects that result in
major casting repairs are:
(i) Those that cause the casting to leak during hydrostatic testing.
(ii) Those that result in repair cavities that exceed 20 percent of the casing wall thickness or 25 mm
(1 in), whichever is less.
(iii) Those that result in a repair area that exceeds 6500 mm

b. All major defects and subsequent repairs shall be documented on weld repair maps. Weld repair
maps shall specify defect location, size, the weld and NDT procedures to make the repairs. All weld
repair procedures with supporting documents shall be submitted for review and approval prior to any
repair work.
c. All casting repair welds shall be examined using the same nondestructive testing methods that
were employed to inspect the casing.
2.10.2.6 Add the following new paragraph:
Welding to reinforce the casting, either before or after completion of casting repair welding is not
permitted.
2.10.3.5.5 Add the following sentence:
Piping welds to the casing shall be made before heat treating and hydrotesting of the casing.
Section 3 – Accessories
3.1 Drivers
3.1.1 Add the following sentence.
Electric motors shall conform to SES E06-S01 or E06-S02 for Induction Motors and the Data Sheets
furnished with the standards.
3.1.9 Modify the first sentences as follows:
Steam turbines shall conform to SES G06-S01.
3.1.10 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Gears shall conform to SES G07-S01.
3.1.13 Add the following new paragraph:
Diesel Engine driver shall conform to SES G10-S01.

3.2 Couplings and Guards
3.2.2 Add the following paragraphs:
a. Unless otherwise specified, non-lubricated disc-pack or diaphragm type, spacer couplings shall
be furnished for horizontal pumps. Flexible disk type couplings shall have disks of stainless steel,
except for applications having presence of chlorides. The following design features shall be provided
for disc-type couplings:
(i) An arrangement to facilitate the de-coupling of the pump without loosening of bolts which keep
the disc pack together.
(ii) The spacer shall be piloted to confine it to the coupling hub area in the event of failure of the
discs.
b. Flexible couplings shall be capable of accepting parallel misalignment of at least 1270 microns
(50 mils) between the shaft ends, and shall be capable of absorbing twice the maximum axial growth,
plus twice the axial magnetic centering force of the electric motor.
3.2.12 Add the following sentences:
Coupling guards shall be of a non-sparking metallic material. Coupling guards shall not obstruct access to
the pump or driver. The guard shall be furnished with a door to provide access for inspection of the flexible
elements. The guard design shall require SABIC approval.
3.3 Baseplates
3.3.4 Add the following sentences:
All shims furnished shall provide full foot support. Partial shims are not acceptable.
3.3.5 Add the following sentences:
Vendor is responsible for providing a complete pumping unit with baseplate that avoids any
equipment/baseplate resonances with the running speed range or any harmonics of running speed.
3.3.14 Modify the first and second sentences as follows:
Horizontal and vertical alignment positioning screws shall be provided if the pump or driver mass exceeds
100 kg (220 lb).
3.3.21 Add the following new paragraph:
Provisions for doweling the pump and driver to the baseplate shall be provided. The dowels shall be
provided by the vendor for field installation after final alignment.
3.5 Piping and Appurtenances
3.5.1 General
3.5.1.3 Add the following sentences:
Required auxiliary piping for lube oil, cooling water and seal flush, including all accessories such as gauges
and valves, shall be furnished assembled on pumps, or baseplates, or both as specified on the data
sheets. Each auxiliary system shall be manifolded.
3.5.1.4 The decision is as follows:
Mechanical seal auxiliary systems shall be designed for mounting off the pump baseplate.
3.5.1.9. An exception to the requirement is as follows:
Threaded flanges are not acceptable.
3.5.1.15 Add the following new paragraph:
Socket welded or threaded fittings may be used where indicated for temperatures between -18 and 400 °C
(0 and 750 °F). Above 400 °C, flanged connections are required. Socket welded end connections are
preferred over threaded connections except for services where crevice corrosion could occur.
3.5.1.16 Add the following new paragraph:
When tubing is permitted or specified, compression type fittings shall be used.

3.5.2 Auxiliary Process Fluid Piping
3.5.2.1 Add the following sentence:
Drain piping shall be routed to the edge of the baseplate and shall terminate with flanged connections.
3.5.2.11 Add the following new paragraph:
Balancing lines for multistage pumps shall be made up with flanged joints; screwed unions are not
acceptable.
Section 4 – Inspection, Testing, and Preparation for Shipment
4.1 General
4.1.4 The decision is as follows:
Requirements for inspection, testing, witnessing, or observing shall be as specified on the Pump Data
Sheets.
4.1.4.1 Add the following sentence:
The vendor shall notify SABIC suitably far in advance of any witnessed inspection or test specified on the
Data Sheet.
4.1.8 Add the following new paragraph:
All tests, whether witnessed or not, shall be certified by the vendor.
4.2 Testing
4.2.2 Hydrostatic Test
4.2.2.1.g Add the following new paragraph:
Hydrostatic testing, whether on a component basis or assembled pump, shall be done after all machining
and welding (for example: piping connections, drain, vent), has been completed and all plugs installed.
4.2.2.4 Add the following sentence:
If leakage occurs during hydrostatic test, the test shall be repeated after repairs are completed.
4.2.3 Performance Test
4.2.3.2.1 Add the following sentences:
All pumps shall be run for at least one (1) h at rated capacity. Bearing temperature equilibrium shall be
reached during the test period.
4.2.3.3.1 Add the following sentence:
When a re-test is required, vibration levels shall again be recorded.
4.2.3.3.2 Add the following sentence:
Bearing metal or bearing oil temperatures, shall be measured and recorded during the test periods.
4.2.4 Optional Tests
4.2.4.1 NPSHR Test
4.2.4.1.4 Add the following new paragraph:
NPSH test shall be carried out when margin between the minimum NPSH available and the expected
NPSH required is less than 0.9 m (3 ft) for the pumps with a capacity up to 1500 m
3
/hr. For pumps with a
capacity more than 1500 m
3
/hr, NPSH test shall be performed when the margin is less than 1.6 m (5.2 ft).
4.2.4.1.5 Add the following new paragraph:
An NPSH test shall be performed when inducers are provided to improve suction conditions for an
impeller. The NPSH test shall demonstrate a one percent head drop for acceptance.

4.3. Preparation for Shipment
4.4.1 Add the following sentence:
All rotors shall be properly secured to prevent any axial or radial movement.
4.3.7 Add the following new paragraph:
Small or fragile components not installed in the pump for shipment shall be removed, tagged, wrapped in
waterproof material, packed in a box and fastened to the pump baseplate.
4.3.8 Add the following new paragraph:
Vendor shall not ship the pump until the test data is approved.
Section 5 – Specific Pump Types
5.1.2 Vertical In-Line (Type OH3)
5.1.2.11 An exception to the requirement is as follows:
Any proposal(s) to use grease lubricated bearings require SABIC approval.
5.1.2.12 Add the following sentences:
The pumps shall be furnished with a spacer coupling. The spacer shall be of sufficient length to allow
mechanical seal replacement without removing the pump or driver.
5.2 Between Bearings Pumps (Type BB1- BB5)
5.2.1.2 An exception to the requirement is as follows:
Pumps for service temperature of 0 °C (32 °F) to 120 °C (250 °F) may be foot mounted.
5.2.2.2 The decision is as follows:
The impellers of multistage pumps shall be positively locked against axial movement in the direction
opposite to normal hydraulic thrust.
5.3 Vertically Suspended Pumps
5.3.7.3 Mounting plates
5.3.7.3.4 An exception to the requirement is as follows:
Alignment positioning screws shall be provided for each drive train component that weighs more than 100
Kg (225 lb).
5.3.12 Double Casing Diffuser (VS6) and Volute (VS7) Pumps
5.3.12.6 The decision is as follows:
A drain line shall be provided from the bottom of the can to grade level.
Section 6 – Vendor’s Data
6.2 Proposals
6.2.3 Technical Data – Add the following new items:
p. Minimum corrosion allowance for the pump casing.
q. Type of rust preventive to be applied to the pump interior.
