1. Purpose
This standard is an addendum to API 686, Recommended Practices for Machinery Installation and
Installation Design, First Edition, April 1996, Chapter 9 – Commissioning. It covers the final stages
of preparation for start-up and commissioning of rotating machinery.
2. General
2.1 This standard, combined with the manufacturer’s installation, commissioning, start-up,
and maintenance instructions will provide the necessary directives required for the
proper commissioning of rotating machinery.
2.2 See SES G20-C01 Machinery Installation and Criteria for Installation Design.
3. Addenda
The following section, subsection and paragraph numbers refer to API 686, First Edition,
April 1996.
Chapter 9 – Commissioning
Section 3 – Commissioning Design
Add the following new paragraph:

Section 4 – Field Commissioning
4.2 Preoperational Checks
4.2.2.2 Add the following sentence:
It shall be ensured when installing the 100-mesh screen in the inlet piping, that the screen support
design gives adequate open area on the screen for the required flow rate.
Add the following new paragraph:
4.2.6 The preoperational checks included in this document are meant as guidelines and shall
be used to supplement the manufacturer’s instructions. These items shall be discussed in the precommissioning

buffer system is in operation and there is pressure to the seal before applying lube oil or flush oil to
the system. If liquids are applied to the system with no pressure on the seal, liquid may enter the
system and cause damage to the seals.
Section 5 – Compressors
5.2 Commissioning of Compressors
5.2.7 Add the following sentences:
If the compressor is equipped with dry gas seals, it shall be ensured that the dry gas seal buffer
system is in operation before the lube oil system is started.
