DEFINITION OF TERMS USED IN API 1104

Here are terms defined in API 1104 Standard:

Approved: Accepted by the responsible engineering organization or owner, or by an organization that has been delegated such approval authority.
Base Metal: The material to be welded or cut.
CJP: Complete joint penetration.
Filler Metal: The consumable material used in the welding process to create the weld.
Heat Affected Zone (HAZ): The portion of the base metal that has been heated to a temperature at which its microstructure has been altered by the welding process.
Incomplete Fusion: A weld defect in which the weld metal and the base metal are not properly fused.
Joint: The junction between two pieces of metal to be welded.
Joint Design: The manner in which the joint is prepared and the type of weld to be made.
Nondestructive Examination (NDE): A method of inspection that does not damage the material being examined.
Owner: The person or organization that is responsible for the construction, operation, or maintenance of the pipeline or related facility.
Porosity: A weld defect characterized by the presence of small, gas-filled voids in the weld metal.
Preheat: The heating of the base metal to a temperature above its ambient temperature prior to welding.
Process: A series of steps used to produce a weld.
Qualified: Demonstrated by tests, or by other evidence, to possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Qualified Welding Procedure: A written document that provides the necessary information to produce a weld that meets the required standards.
Repair Weld: A weld made to repair a defect in an existing weld.
Root: The base of the weld joint.
Weld: The fused joint between two pieces of metal.
Weld Metal: The metal that is added during the welding process to form the weld.
Weld Size: The dimensions of the weld, including the size of the weld bead and the size of the weld reinforcement.
