1. PURPOSE

1.1 This global engineering specification defines and describes the minimum requirements for “Field‑I” insulation systems for use on cold and cryogenic piping.

2. SCOPE

2.1 This specification applies to “Field-I” insulation that operates between -196° and 38°C (-320° and 100°F).

2.2 This specification applies to systems that will be installed outdoors, aboveground, and subject to sunlight, temperature extremes, and other ambient weather conditions.

2.3 Fully described and detailed alternate materials or methods of construction may be presented by the supplier for Air Products’ consideration and approval.

2.4 This insulation material is identified on drawings with the symbols: Q1 – cryogenic piping for the prevention of heat gain (see 4WPI-INS023)

3. RELATED DOCUMENTS

3.3 All standards and documents referred to herein shall be the latest edition and addenda in effect at the time of purchase, unless otherwise stated.

4. definitions

4.1 Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. and its subsidiary and associated companies will be referred to herein as Air Products.

4.2 The insulation contractor who supplies and installs the insulation will be referred to herein as the contractor.

4.3 Approved equal in this specification means “approved in writing by Air Products.”

4.4 All temperatures and dimensions in the text of this document are given in metric units with US customary units in parenthesis. In the figures, dimensions are only given in mm for clarity (divide by 25.4 to convert mm to inches).

4.5 “Field-I” thermal insulation is a polyurethane insulation with a fiberglass jacket for a vapor barrier and protective jacket. “Field-I” differs from “Pre-I” insulation in that it is installed in the field after pipe erection, inspection, and pressure testing is complete.

5. waivers

5.1 Applications for waivers of the requirements contained in this specification, or to supply alternative items other than those listed, shall be made in writing to the Air Products representative, who will obtain approval and written authorization from the relevant Air Products manager prior to order, supply, or installation by the contractor.

5.2 In order that any alternative material requested by the contractor may be evaluated, the contractor shall complete and submit an “Information Sheet for Alternative Material Request” in Appendix B, providing full details of the properties of the recommended alternative.

6. warranty

6.1 Upon completion of the installation, the contractor shall provide to the Air Products site manager a completed “Certificate of Conformity” as shown in Appendix C listing all materials used.

7. Materials

7.1 Supply

7.1.1 The contractor shall supply all insulating materials and accessory materials unless otherwise stated in the contract. Appendix A provides full names and addresses of suppliers. As materials may differ in availability by location of supply, Appendix A contains lists per geographical area of supply. The location of supply will be stated in the contract documents from Air Products. Appendix D provides guidance to the contractor in estimating the following materials to be ordered from the respective suppliers listed in Appendix A. Pipe Insulating Material [1] Cavity Fill Material [3] Fiberglass Jacket Adhesive [5] Fiberglass Jacket [10]

7.1.2 Whenever any material is specified by manufacturer’s name, only that material shall be used.

7.1.3 All materials are indicated in the text and figures of this and other specifications by the numbers shown in square brackets, thus [0], that refer to the materials in Sections 7 and 8, and are identified in Appendix A of this specification.

7.2 Pipe Insulating Material [1]

7.2.1 Insulation shall be two-component, rigid polyurethane foam with the following properties: Density of 38 kg/m3 (2.4 lb/ft3) measured according to ASTM D 1622. Closed-cell content of 86 to 91% determined by ASTM D 6226. Aged thermal conductivity of 0.024 to 0.032 W/m-K (0.165 to 0.225 Btu-inch/hr-ft2-°F) at 24°C (75°F) determined by ASTM C 518. Minimum compressive strength of 140 kPa (20 psi) determined by ASTM D 1621.

7.2.2 Preformed 3 meter (9.84 feet) long sections shall be supplied. The supplier may control the insulation’s expansion by employing molds or may trim the insulation layer to result in a uniform thickness.

7.2.3 Longitudinal and circumferential gaps between adjacent insulation pieces shall be tapered a 8 mm (1/4 in) wide gap at the inside diameter of the pipe and a 13 mm (1/2 in) wide gap at the outside of the insulation. This is to prevent air from becoming trapped while filling the cavity with the foam kit.

7.2.4 Acceptable materials and suppliers are listed in Appendix A.

8. accessory Materials

8.1 Cavity Fill Material [3]

8.1.1 The foam kit shall be a two-component polyurethane foam spray. One-component sprays cannot be used.

8.1.2 Acceptable materials and suppliers are listed in Appendix A.

8.2 Auxiliary Cavity Fill Material [3b]

8.2.1 Contraction joint and cavity fill material shall be a 16 kg/m3 (1 lb/ft3) fibrous glass blanket or unbonded, loose, mineral fiber (rock) wool.

8.2.2 Acceptable materials and suppliers are shown in Appendix A.

9. insulation thickness and limits

9.1 The insulation thickness and the extent to which the insulation shall be provided and installed on piping shall be as stated on the Insulation Summary and/or isometrics and drawings provided by Air Products. The thickness may be varied by + 3 mm (1/8 in) to suit the manufacturer’s nearest available standard sizes. When the insulation thickness stated is unavailable, the next larger thickness available shall be used.

9.2 When the insulation thickness is not stated in paragraph 9.3, the piping that requires insulation shall be insulated with a thickness determined on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the Air Products representative.

9.3 Insulation thickness for “Field-I” insulation shall be as specified in Table 1 below:
