1. Purpose
Process Industry Practices (PIP) RESF001, specification for Centrifugal Fans dated June 1999, is adopted
as a SABIC Engineering Standard (SES) with the following addendum.
2. General
2.1 Centrifugal fans and blowers manufactured and packaged to this standard shall comply with
PIP RESF001 except as modified herein or as set forth in data sheets, project specifications, or the
purchase order.
2.2 In this specification the terms fan and blower may be used interchangeably.
2.3 Special purpose fans and blowers are covered by SES G11-S02.
2.4 Cooling tower fans and positive displacement blowers are not covered by this specification.
3. Addenda
The following section, subsection, and paragraph numbers refer to PIP RESF001, June 1999.
Section 1 – Introduction
1.2 Scope
Add the following sentences:
General purpose fans and blowers are usually small in power and are used in noncritical applications.
Larger, unspared fans and blowers in critical service are covered by SES G11-S02.
1.3 Unit Responsibility
Add the following new paragraph:
The fan vendor shall have unit responsibility for the fan, driver and all auxiliary equipment specified on the
data sheets.
1.4 General
Add the following new paragraphs:
1.4.1 Fans shall be supplied by vendors qualified by experience in manufacturing the unit proposed. To
qualify, the vendor shall have manufactured, at the point of manufacture, at least two units of comparable
power, speed and service which have been operating satisfactorily for at least over a year.
1.4.2 Unless otherwise specified, fans will be installed outdoors without a roof in Saudi Arabia. Weather
conditions in which the equipment will operate, including maximum and minimum temperatures, unusual
humidity, and dust problems will be shown in SES G11-X01. The unit and it’s auxiliaries shall be suitable
for operation in specified conditions. Vendor shall list in the proposal any special protection required.

Section 3 – Definitions
Add the following new paragraphs:
Evase is a diffuser or a diverging discharge transition piece.
Normal operating point is the point at which usual operation is expected and optimum efficiency is desired.
Fan performance shall be guaranteed at the normal operating point unless otherwise specified.
Unit responsibility refers to the responsibility for coordinating the technical aspects of the equipment and all
auxiliary systems included in the scope of the order.
Section 4 – Fan Performance
4.2.6 Add the following new paragraph:
For parallel operation, fan performance curves shall have a continuously rising pressure characteristic from
the rated capacity to surge. Performance curves, corrected for the specified gas at the specified conditions,
shall be based on performance tests in accordance with AMCA 210.
4.2.7 Add the following new paragraph:
The normal operating point is that point at which it is expected that the fan will be operated at the majority
of the time. It shall be the fan manufacturer’s responsibility to optimize the fan’s efficiency as close to this
point as practical.
Section 5 – Installation Effect
Substitute the paragraph as follows:
The fan vendor shall review the SABIC’s duct layout and design to determine potential impact on fan
performance.
Section 6 – Noise Criteria
6.3 Noise Limits
6.3.1 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Unless otherwise specified, the maximum allowable sound pressure level for the fan, its drive train and fan
accessories shall be 85 dBA at 1 m. See SES S20-G01.
Section 7 – Housing
7.3 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Materials of construction shall be the manufacturer’s standard for the specified operating conditions,
except as required by the data sheets or this specification. The corrosion allowance of carbon steel plate
shall be 3 mm. Materials shall be identified in the proposal with applicable ASTM or ISO numbers including
material grade.
7.6 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
The housing or scroll shall have a minimum NPT

pipe coupling at the lowest point of drainage. The pipe
coupling shall be plugged with a plug made from the same material as the housing.

7.8 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
The housing split line orientation shall allow for removal of the rotor without removal of the lower half of the
bearing pillow blocks.
7.10 Add the following new paragraph:
The direction of rotation shall clearly and permanently marked on the housing.

Section 8 – External Forces and Moments
8.4 Add the following new paragraph:
The vendor shall provide expansion joint information and recommendations if expansion joints are
required for thermal expansion or vibration isolation, or both.
Section 9 – Rotating Elements
9.2 Shaft
9.2.1 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
The shaft shall be machined throughout its length.
9.2.2 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
The shaft shall be ground at the coupling and bearing areas. Finish of ground surfaces shall not exceed
0.8 micrometers roughness average (Ra).
9.2.5 Add the following new paragraph:
Shafts shall be capable of handling 110 percent of the rated driver torque from rest to rated speed.
9.2.6 Add the following new paragraph:
Corrosion resistant shaft sleeves shall be provided for fans in corrosive services. Sleeves shall extend
150 mm into the fan housing or to the impeller hub. A shaft sleeve shall be installed with an interference fit
and the assembly shall take into account differential thermal expansion at the highest operating
temperature. After assembly of the shaft, mechanical runout on the shaft sleeve in the seal area shall not
exceed 75 micrometers total indicated runout.
9.4 Non-Contacting Vibration Probe Considerations for Sleeve Bearings
Add the following note:
Note: Non-contacting vibration probes are rarely used on general purpose fans or blowers.
Section 10 – Dynamic Considerations
10.1 Lateral Analysis
10.1.1 Add the following note:
Note: Fans rated 150 kW or less operating at speeds of 1800 RPM or less using rolling element
(anti-friction) bearings rarely require a damped lateral critical speed analysis. Fans with higher power
ratings, higher speeds or hydrodynamic sleeve bearings should be considered for lateral analysis.
10.3 Balancing
10.3.2 Add the following note:
Note: The additional balancing requirements of this section are typically applied to fans operating at
speeds of 3600 RPM or greater or to fans larger than 75 kW.
Section 11 – Bearings and Bearing Housings
11.1 Rolling Element Bearings
11.1.3 Add the following new paragraph:
Rolling element bearings shall have a DN factor less than 200,000 (the DN factor is the product of bearing
size (bore) in millimeters and the rated speed in revolutions per minute).
11.1.4 Add the following new paragraph:
Rolling element bearings shall have a load factor less than 2,000,000 (load factor is the product of rated
power in kW and rated in revolutions per minute).
11.1.5 Add the following new paragraph:
The use of ‘maximum load’ (filling slot) anti-friction bearings is specifically prohibited for any service
including drivers (motors, turbines or gears).

11.1.6 Add the following new paragraph:
Ball type thrust bearings shall be dual single row, 40 degree, light pre-load, angular contact type
(7000 series), installed back to back.
11.4 Lubrication
11.4.1 Rolling Element Bearings
11.4.1.1 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
The method of lubrication for rolling element bearings on fans rated less than 37 kW shall be grease. Fans
rated above 37 kW and all fans in process service shall use ring oil or oil mist lubrication. Bearings with ring
oil lubrication shall be equipped with 100 cm

minimum size constant level sight feed oilers with translucent
containers not subject to sunlight or heat induced opacity and with protective wire cages. Supplier of these
oilers shall meet the SABIC’s preference when specified.
11.4.1.2 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Unless otherwise specified, for grease or self-contained oil lubrication methods, the maximum bearing
housing surface temperature shall be 75
°
C (167
°
F) at specified fan operating conditions.
11.4.2 Sleeve Bearings
11.4.2.2 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
When specified, bearings shall be equipped with 100 cm

minimum size constant level sight feed oilers
with translucent containers not subject to sunlight or heat induced opacity and with protective wire cages.
Supplier of these oilers shall meet the SABIC’s preference when specified.
11.4.2.3 Add the following new paragraph:
When independent circulating oil systems are used they shall comply with Chapter 3 – General Purpose Oil
Systems of API Standard 614 and SES G03-S01.
Section 12 – Drivers
12.2 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Motor drivers shall conform to SES E06-S01 or E06-S02 as applicable. Any other special requirements will
be noted on the motor data sheets.
12.4 Add the following new paragraph:
Steam turbine drivers shall conform to SES G06-S01.
Section 13 – Drive System
13.1 Direct Coupled
13.1.1 Add the following sentences:
Direct coupled fans are preferred in all applications. Direct coupling or gear drives are required for all fans
rated over 75 kW.
13.1.2 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Couplings between the fan, driver, and gear unit shall be steel, and of the non-lubricated, disc type with
stainless steel discs. Removable-type coupling guards shall be furnished and mounted.
13.2 Belt
13.2.1 Add the following sentence:
Belt drive is acceptable only on fans rated less than 75 kW.
13.3 Gears
Add the following new paragraph:
Gears shall conform to the requirements of SES G07-S01.

Section 14 – Baseplate
14.1 General
14.1.4 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
All welding on baseplates shall be continuous. Stitch welding is unacceptable.
14.1.6 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Baseplates shall have non-skid decking on the top.
Section 15 – Instrumentation and Electrical
15.4 Add the following new paragraph:
Instrumentation shall be in accordance with SES X01-S03.
15.5 Add the following new paragraph:
Instrumentation and electrical wiring shall conform to the requirements of SES E19-S01.
15.6 Add the following new paragraph:
Electric motors, electrical components and electrical installations shall be suitable for the area
classification and groupings specified by the purchaser on the data sheets and shall meet the
requirements of API RP 500 and NFPA Bulletin Number 70 and SES E02-E02.
Section 16 – Performance and Mechanical Run Tests
16.1 General
16.1.4 Add the following new paragraph:
The vendor shall notify SABIC not less than 15 working days prior to the date the equipment will be ready
for test.
16.1.5 Add the following new paragraph:
Acceptance of shop tests does not constitute a waiver of requirements to meet field performance under
specified operating conditions, nor does inspection relieve the vendor’s responsibilities.
16.3 Mechanical Run Test
16.3.1 Add the following paragraphs:
As a minimum, this test shall include:
The fan shall be operated form 0 to 115 percent of rated speed for variable speed drives and at
100 percent of rated speed for constant speed drives. Operation shall be for an uninterrupted period of at
least two (2) hours after all measurements have stabilized to check bearing performance and vibration.
All warning, protective and control devices used during the test shall be checked and adjustments shall be
made as required.
During the mechanical running test the mechanical operation of all equipment being tested and the
operation of the test instrumentation shall be satisfactory. The measured unfiltered vibration shall not
exceed the limits set by this specification and shall be recorded throughout the operating speed range.
Hydrodynamic bearings shall be removed, inspected and when applicable, reassembled after the
mechanical running test is completed.
Bearings used in oil mist lubrication systems shall be pre-lubricated before testing.
All oil pressures, viscosities and temperatures shall be within the range of operating values recommended
in the vendor’s operating instructions for the specific unit being tested. For pressure lubrication systems,
oil flow rates for each bearing housing shall be measured.
Section 17 – Vendor Documentation
17.10 Add the following new paragraph:
SABIC shall state in the inquiry and in the order the number of prints required and the times within which
they are to be submitted by the vendor.

17.11 Add the following new paragraph:
Review of the vendor’s drawings will be made promptly after receipt by SABIC. Such review does not
constitute permission to deviate from any requirements in the order unless specifically agreed upon in
writing. After the drawings have been reviewed, the vendor shall furnish copies in the quantity specified. All
drawings shall be clearly legible.
17.12 Add the following new paragraph:
The vendor shall supply cross sectional or assembly type drawings for all equipment furnished showing all
parts, running fits, clearances and balancing data required for erection or maintenance. Typical drawings
are unacceptable.
Section 18 – Preparation for Shipment
18.6 Add the following new paragraph:
Equipment shall be suitable prepared for the type of shipment specified, including blocking of the rotor
when necessary. Blocked rotors shall be identified by means of corrosion resistant tags attached with
stainless steel wire. The preparation shall be suitable for a period of 6 months outdoor storage from the
time of shipment, with no disassembly required before operation, except for bearing and seal inspections. If
storage is contemplated for longer periods, SABIC shall consult with the vendor regarding procedures to be
followed.
18.7 Add the following new paragraph:
The vendor shall provide SABIC with the instructions necessary to preserve the integrity of the storage
preparation after the equipment arrives at the job site and before start-up.
18.8 Add the following new paragraph:
Preparation for shipment shall be made after all testing and inspection of the equipment has been
accomplished and the equipment has been accomplished and the equipment has been approved by
SABIC.
18.9 Add the following new paragraph:
The interior of the equipment shall be clean; free from scale, welding spatter and foreign objects. The
interior shall be sprayed or flushed with a suitable rust preventative that can be removed with solvent. As
an alternative, SABIC may specify a permanent suitable coating.
