This article is about HVAC Fire Damper Receiving Inspection and Selection as per International Codes and Standards as per International Codes and standards.

Fire Damper Selection as per International Codes and Standards

  1. Delivered equipment and material shall be free of damage.
  2. Fire dampers shall bear a label from a recognized (by Saudi Aramco) testing laboratory (such as UL) or be tested in accordance with the requirements of Uniform Building Code, UBC STD 43-7.
  3. Note: Whether Fire Damper or Combination Fire/Smoke Damper is UL listed or not can be determined from UL web page. Please visit UL site at WWW.UL.COM. You need to check and make sure that the supplied model is listed. Also check for size, position, System type and rating of the supplied dampers. For more clarifications you may contact Fire Damper Remediation committee members.
  4. Fire Damper shall be labeled for both maximum airflow permitted and direction of flow. (UMC Para 605.2)
  5. Minimum size of retaining angle provided shall be 1-1/2 “x 1-1/2” x 0.054 (SMACNA Chapter 2, Typical Inspection Details)
Note: Where fire dampers arrive at site without retaining angles (retaining angles are considered bulk items), the requirements above shall be verified at the time of installation.”
  6. Minimum sleeve thickness shall be 26 gauge for ducts 12” and down, 24 gauge for 13”-30”, 22 gauge for 31”-54”, 20 for 55”-84” and 18 gauge for 85” and up. (SMACNA Chapter 2, Typical Installation Detail)
Note: Where sleeves are not delivered at the same time as fire dampers, the requirements above shall be verified at the time of installation.”
  7. Fire damper shall have a 1-1/2 hour fire protection rating (shown on the nameplate) for walls, partitions or floor with fire resistance rating of less than 3 hours (SMACNA Para 3.2.1 / NFPA 90 A Para 5.4.1.1)
  8. Fire damper shall have a 3 hour fire protection rating (shown on the name plate) for walls, partitions or floor with fire resistance rating of more than 3 hours (SMACNA Para 3.2.1 / NFPA 90 A Para 5.4.1.2)
  9. Minimum sleeve thickness for breakaway connection shall be as shown on table below:
    (SMACNA Chapter 2, Typical Installation Detail-Table 2-2)
