Instrument Asset Management System (IAMS): Ensuring Process Data Acquisition Efficiency

The development of modern systems has seen the need for an effective Instrument Asset Management System (IAMS), either integrated or separate from the SCADA operator/engineering workstation. This system is used to configure, document, calibrate, and diagnose all smart field devices.

The IAMS software must be able to communicate with all SMART field devices from various manufacturers. It is also essential that the device diagnostic data access does not interfere with the timely processing of the process data.

The IAMS must have the following minimum functions and features:

• Automatically and continuously monitor the status, events, and operating conditions of the field-connected devices without interfering with the SCADA process Data acquisition functionality.
• Connect and configure instruments and valves online.
• Valve diagnostic tests such as dynamic error band, drive signal, output signal, step response, and signature curve, all presented in graphical and statistical data format.
• Access to current device information to determine their health and view of the process variables.
• Perform device diagnostics with the results documented in the IAMS.

The Instrument Asset Management System is an essential component of modern systems, ensuring the efficient acquisition of process data. With the right IAMS in place, businesses can guarantee the accuracy of their data, while also ensuring the safety of their equipment and personnel.
