American Society for Testing and Materials

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is an international standards organization that develops and publishes technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services. ASTM standards are voluntary consensus standards, meaning that they are based on the consensus of experts in the relevant subject matter. ASTM standards are used in a variety of industries, including construction, automotive, aerospace, and medical. ASTM standards are recognized worldwide and are regularly adopted and enforced by regulatory bodies in many countries.

  8. ASTM D4791 Test Method for Flat Particles, or Elongated Particles, or Flat and Flat and Elongated Particles in Coarse Aggregate.

Bituminous Materials Test Methods

Bituminous materials test methods cover a range of testing procedures related to asphalt and other bituminous products. These methods include tests for physical properties such as viscosity, softening point, ductility, and kinematic viscosity; tests for composition such as elemental analysis and distillation; tests for performance such as marshall stability and rutting; and tests for environmental compatibility such as freeze-thaw and water resistance. The test methods are used to evaluate the quality of the material and to determine its suitability for the intended application.

  1. ASTM D5 Standard Test Method for Penetration of Bituminous Materials.
  2. ASTM D36 Standard Test Method for Softening Point of Bitumen (Ring-and-Ball)
  3. ASTM D113 Standard Test Method for Ductility of Bitumen Material.
  4. ASTM D1559 Test Method for Resistance to Plastic Flow of Bituminous Mixtures using Marshall Apparatus.

  9. ASTM D6307 Standard Test Method for Asphalt Content of Hot Mix Asphalt by the Ignition Method.

Cementitious Materials Test Methods

Cementitious materials test methods are laboratory methods used to evaluate the performance of cementitious materials and their constituent materials. These methods measure the physical and chemical properties of cementitious materials and/or their components. They are mainly used to determine the strength and durability of the material, and its ability to resist a range of external forces such as abrasion, chemical attack, and water absorption. The tests are typically conducted in accordance with international standards such as ASTM, EN, and ISO.

  1. ASTM C5 Standard Specification for Quicklime for Structural Purposes.
  2. ASTM C150 Standard Specification for Portland Cement.

Soil Materials Test Methods

Soil materials test methods are used to determine the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of soils. These tests are used to evaluate the suitability of soil for various engineering and agricultural applications. Common tests include particle size analysis, Atterberg limits, compaction tests, specific gravity, permeability, pH, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity and organic matter content. These tests are used to determine soil properties such as texture, structure, porosity, strength, and compressibility. Results of these tests can be used to predict soil behavior in engineering projects.

  1. ASTM D1556 – Test Method for Density and Unit Weight of Soil in Place by the Sand-Cone Method.
  2. ASTM D1557 Test Method for Laboratory Compaction Characteristics of Soil Using Modified Effort [56,000 ft-lbf/ft³ (2,700 kN-m/m³)]
