1. Purpose
American Petroleum Institute (API) 686, Recommended Practices for Machinery Installation and
Installation Design, First Edition, April 1996, is adopted as a SABIC Engineering Standard (SES)
with the following addenda.
2. General
These recommended practices are intended to supplement vendor instructions and the instructions
provided by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and shall be followed with regard to
equipment maintenance during storage, installation and checkout.
3. Addenda
The following section, subsection and paragraph numbers refer to API 686, First Edition,
April 1996.
Chapter 2 – Rigging and Lifting
1.2 Preplanning the Lift
1.2.7 The decision is as follows:
The need for manufacturer’s participation shall be determined by SABIC.
Chapter 3 – Jobsite Receiving and Protection
1.1 Scope
1.1.2
Add the following sentence:
Manufacturer shall advise of any preservation requirements that are in addition to API 686, or
provide a statement that the equipment will be adequately protected if API 686 is complied with.
1.3 Preplanning
1.3.3 The decision is as follows:
The need for manufacturer’s participation shall be determined by SABIC.
1.4 Jobsite Receiving and Inspection
1.4.m. Add the following sentence:
Manufacturer shall be contacted if the impact measuring device indicates excessive shock loads or
the equipment appears to be damaged.
1.5 General Instructions – Jobsite Protection
1.5.18. b The decision is as follows:
Measuring of the total acid number (TAN) shall be required.
1.6 Lubricants and Preservatives
1.6.1 Add the following sentence:
Vendor shall advise all proposed preservatives by type, brand and supplier for approval by SABIC
and Manufacturer.
1.10 Compressors – General
1.10.2 Add the following sentence:
