4. DEFINITIONS
4.1 Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. and its subsidiary and associated companies will be referred to herein as Air Products.
4.2 The insulation contractor who supplies and installs the insulation will be referred to herein as the contractor.
4.3 Approved equal in this specification means “approved in writing by Air Products.”
4.4 All temperatures and dimensions in the text of this document are given in metric units with US customary units in parenthesis.
4.5 Mineral fiber is the generic term for insulation manufactured either from a mineral substance such as molten rock or slag and referred to herein as rock wool. Rock Wool is also a manufacturer’s company name but is not used herein to mean that company’s product exclusively.
4.6 Mineral fiber manufactured from molten glass or fiberglass shall not be used.
5. WAIVERS
5.1 Applications for waivers of the requirements contained in this specification, or to supply alternative items other than those listed, shall be made in writing to the Air Products representative, who will obtain approval and written authorization from the relevant Air Products manager before order, supply, or installation by the contractor.
5.2 So that any alternative material requested by the contractor may be evaluated, the contractor shall complete and submit an “Information Sheet for Alternative Material Request” in Appendix B, providing full details of the properties of the recommended alternative.
6. WARRANTY
6.1 Upon completion of the installation, the contractor shall provide to the Air Products site manager a completed “Certificate of Conformity” as shown in Appendix C listing all materials used.
7. MATERIALS
7.1 Supply
7.1.1 The contractor shall supply all insulating materials and accessory materials unless otherwise stated in the contract. Refer to Table 1 for the applicable materials to be supplied for each insulation type symbol. Appendix A provides full names and addresses of suppliers. As materials may differ in availability by location of supply, Appendix A contains lists per geographical area of supply. The location of supply will be stated in the contract documents from Air Products.
7.1.2 Whenever any material is specified by manufacturer’s name, only that material shall be used. When there is a choice of materials, to ensure compatibility, all weather barrier mastics, sealers, adhesives, and reinforcements shall be the products of one manufacturer and/or shall be specified by the manufacturer as being compatible with one another. If it is not possible to obtain the materials stated, the contractor may submit a request, according to Section 5, to use a substitute material, but in no circumstances may it be used without the prior written approval of Air Products.
7.1.3 All materials are indicated in the text and figures of this and other specifications by the numbers shown in square brackets, thus [0], that refer to the materials in Sections 7 and 8, and are identified in Appendix A of this specification.
7.1.4 The contractor shall ensure that all insulation material for stainless steel piping or equipment is certified to Air Products before installation by the insulation manufacturer as meeting national requirements for not having significant quantities of substances that will promote corrosive attack on stainless steel. It shall meet the requirements of ASTM C 795.
