Good Workmanship in Electrical Construction

All electrical work must be installed in an orderly and professional manner, using the correct type and size of approved connectors that are securely tightened and properly terminated. All openings in boxes, cabinets, and fittings must be effectively closed, and all grounding and bonding must be done according to the National Electrical Code.

If there is a disagreement about what constitutes a “neat and workmanlike” electrical installation, you can refer to an industry-accepted ANSI standard which provides a clear description and illustration of what is expected.

Unacceptable electrical installations include cables or raceways not supported properly (e.g. sagging between supports or wrong support methods); raceways that are bent or kinked in the wrong way, flattened, or not measured properly; and cabinets, cutout boxes, and enclosures that are not level or not securely fastened.

The NEC requires that any unused openings on boxes, cabinets, and fittings be effectively closed to prevent potential hazards or interference with the equipment’s normal operation. This can be done with approved covers, plates, or seals. Unused openings that are not meant for the operation of equipment, mounting purposes, or listed equipment design must be closed off enough to provide protection similar to the wall of the equipment. If using metallic plugs or plates with nonmetallic enclosures, they must be recessed at least a quarter of an inch from the outer surface of the enclosure.
