1. Purpose
American Petroleum Institute (API) Standard 672, Third Edition, September 1996 is adopted as a SABIC
Engineering Standard with the following addendum.
2. General
Compressors manufactured to this standard shall conform to API 672, Third Edition, except as modified by
this standard, or as set forth on the Data Sheets, Project Specifications or Purchase Order.
3. Addenda
The following section, subsection and paragraph numbers refer to API 672, Third Edition.
Section 1 – General
1.1 Scope
In the note following the first paragraph, modify ‘purchaser’ to ‘SABIC’. This applies throughout API 672.
1.2 Alternative Designs
Add the following sentence:
Flange, pipe size and thread and fastener designs other than stipulated in API 672 shall be considered
alternative designs and shall be disclosed in the vendor’s proposal.
1.3 Conflicting Requirements
Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Any conflict(s) between this standard, SES and industry standards, engineering drawings, and contract
documents shall be resolved at the discretion of SABIC.
1.4 Definition of Terms
1.4.33 Add the following new paragraph:
The inspector is the representative of SABIC with authority to act on behalf of SABIC in all quality
assurance matters.
1.5 Referenced Publications
1.5.2 Add the following paragraph:
The following documents are part of this addendum. The latest issues, amendments, and supplements to
these documents shall apply unless otherwise indicated.

1.6 Vendor Qualification
Add the following new paragraph:
The air compressor packages and their major components shall be supplied by vendors qualified by
experience in manufacturing the units proposed. To qualify, the vendor shall have manufactured at least
two packages of comparable size, model, power rating, and pressure in similar service as indicated in the individual specification and data sheets. These packages shall have been in service satisfactorily for at
least 8000 h.
1.7 Equipment Identification
Add the following new paragraph:
After review of vendor’s drawings, SABIC will assign an ‘equipment number’ for each major piece of
equipment and a ‘tag number’ for each instrument. These numbers shall be cross referenced on vendor
drawings and bills of material. Prior to shipment the vendor shall attach a corrosion resistant metal tag
showing the order number and tag number to any instrument not having that information on its nameplate.
Section 2 – Basic Design
2.1 General
2.1.4 Add the following paragraph:
Unless otherwise specified, the maximum SPL shall be 85 dBA at 1 m from the equipment surface. See
SES S20-G01.
2.1.5 Add the following sentence:
‘Packaged’ means completely assembled, piped, wired, aligned, tested, inspected and prepared for
shipment from the vendor’s shop.
2.1.9 Add the following paragraph:
Unless otherwise specified, the compressor and auxiliaries shall be designed for operation in unprotected
outdoor installation in harsh Saudi Arabian conditions. Site specific data shall be used for equipment
design.
2.1.10 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Unless otherwise specified, maximum inlet design temperature of 37
°
C (99
°
F) shall be used for seawater
cooling.
2.1.11 Add the following paragraphs:
As a minimum, the following provisions shall be included:
a. Dust seal or cover.
b. Filter for breather on vent pipe.
c. Purge connection for the oil reservoir.
2.1.13 Substitute ‘NFPA 70, Articles 500, 501, 502, 504 and 505’ with ‘SES E02-G01’.
2.2 Integrally Geared Compressor
2.2.1 General
2.2.1.1 Add the following paragraph:
The package layout shall provide obstruction free access to all items which may require maintenance or
adjustment during normal operation. System components and pipework installation shall not interfere with
the access for operation and maintenance of any part of the equipment. Designs that require the
compressor covering to be opened for maintenance access to intercoolers or aftercooler are not
acceptable.
2.2.1.4 Add the following paragraphs:
For any proposed machine not able to meet the 10 percent pressure rise at the greatest specified operating
ambient temperature, the vendor shall define:
a. The highest temperature at which the machine can achieve a 10 percent rise, and
b. The percentage rise at the greatest specified operating ambient temperature.
2.2.3 Casing Connections
2.2.3.10 Add the following new paragraph:
Vents and drains shall include valves and shall terminate with a cap or flange as applicable.
2.2.7 Dynamics
2.2.7.2 Lateral Analysis
2.2.7.2.2 Add the bullet inadvertently omitted from this paragraph.
2.2.7.4 Vibration and Balancing
2.2.7.4.4 Substitute ‘50 micrometers (2.0 mil)’ with ‘25 micrometers (1.0 mil)’.
2.2.7.4.6 Add the following paragraph:
The electrical trace shall be continuous. The overlaid mechanical record shall be at no more than 15
degree intervals.
2.2.7.4.7 Add the following paragraph:
Runout for this calculation shall be determined during a slow roll (300-600 rpm of the bull gear with
appropriate speeds on the pinions) on the test stand under the configuration of the mechanical run test.
The runout from 2.2.7.4.6 shall not to be used.
2.2.8 Bearings and Bearing Housings
2.2.8.3 Thrust Bearings
2.2.8.3.2 Delete the paragraph. Gear-type couplings are not permitted.
2.2.8.4 Bearing Housings
2.2.8.4.4 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Unless otherwise specified, thrust and radial bearings shall be fitted with bearing-metal temperature
detectors installed in accordance with SES G19-S01.
2.2.9 Lubrication
2.2.9.2.c Modify the paragraph as follows:
The pressurized oil system shall supply the lubrication requirements for the entire system, including the
driver.
2.2.9.5.8.h Add the following new paragraph:
A nitrogen blanket with equalizing lines and control devices to minimize the nitrogen consumption.
Section 3 – Accessories
3.1 Drivers
3.1.4 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Motor drivers shall conform to SES E06-S01, E06-S02 or E06-S03 as applicable.
3.1.7 Substitute ‘API Standard 611’ with ‘SES G06-S01’.
3.1.10 Substitute ‘API Standard 677’ with ‘SES G07-S01’.
3.2 Couplings and Guards
3.2.1.3 Add the following sentence:
The guard design requires SABIC approval.
3.2.1.11 Add the following sentence:
Couplings operating above 3800 rpm shall meet the component balancing and assembly balance check
requirements of SES G12-S01.
3.3 Baseplate
3.3.15 Add the following sentence:
A minimum of two grounding lugs shall be provided on the baseplate, installed diagonally on opposite
ends.
3.3.16 Add the following new paragraph:
Baseplates shall not be grouted if the baseplate is subject to thermal growth. The vendor shall define the
growth in the proposal.
3.4 Controls and Instrumentation
3.4.1 General
3.4.1.1 Add the following sentence:
Instrumentation shall conform to SES X01-S03 and requirements given herein.
3.4.1.2 Delete ‘When specified’.
3.4.3 Instrument and Control Panels
3.4.3.1.o Add the following new item:
Ammeter for electric motor driven units.
3.4.3.1.p Add the following new item:
Tachometer for turbine driven units.
3.4.3.2 Modify the fifth sentence as follows:
Purging, when required to meet the area classification, shall be provided in accordance with NFPA 496.
3.4.4 Instrumentation
3.4.4.6 Vibration and Position Detectors
In paragraphs 3.4.4.6.2, 3.4.4.6.3, and 3.4.4.6.4 substitute ‘API Standard 670’ with ‘SES G19-S01’.
3.4.4.6.5 Add the following new paragraph:
The integral gear casing shall be provided with an accelerometer as specified in SES G19-S01, capable of
supplying both acceleration and velocity inputs. Location of the accelerometer shall be mutually agreed
upon by the vendor and SABIC.
3.4.5 Alarms and Shutdowns
3.4.5.1 General
Add the following sentence:
Switches shall be hermetically sealed.
3.4.5.3 Alarm and Trip Devices
3.4.5.3.2 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Selection of electric switch actions shall be as noted on the Data Sheet.
3.4.6 Electrical Systems
3.4.6.1.1 Add the following new paragraphs:
Packaged Equipment Requirements:
a. Electrical equipment that is to be furnished as a unit package by an outside vendor shall meet the
same requirements as the components and systems of the plant it is to be installed in.
b. Electrical equipment, wiring systems and electrical installations that are part of an equipment
package shall meet applicable SABIC standards.
c. See SES E21-G01 for specific details that shall be covered.
3.4.6.2 Substitute ‘suitable’ with ‘approved’.
3.4.6.6 Substitute ‘When specified for tropical location,’ with ‘For all applications,’.
3.4.6.7 Add the following sentence:
Wiring for purchaser’s connections shall terminate in electrical junction boxes with terminal strips.
3.5 Piping
3.5.1 General
3.5.1.11 Add the following sentence:
When tubing is permitted or specified, compression type fittings shall be used.
3.5.1.16 Add the following sentence:
Valves, or their internals, shall be removable.
3.7 Inlet Air Filter / Silencer
3.7.b Modify the paragraph as follows:
Filter portion shall be designed such that the first-stage (prefilter) elements be able to change while the
compressor is operating.
3.7.f Add the following new paragraph:
Inlet filter shall be designed to withstand compressor surge.
3.8 Discharge Blowoff Silencer
3.8.1 Add the following sentence:
Discharge blowoff silencer shall be designed to take flow of the compressor at the rated conditions.
Section 4 – Inspection, Testing, and Preparation for Shipment
4.1 General
4.1.1 Add the following sentence:
In addition to the specific inspections and tests noted by SABIC on Data Sheet, the project specification
will have details concerning the number, date and extent of inspection, and full requirements for verifying
compliance with inspections and tests.
4.1.6 Add the following new paragraph:
All tests, whether witnessed or not, shall be certified.
4.3 Testing
4.3.1 General
4.3.1.1 Add the following sentence:
Acceptance of shop tests shall not constitute a waiver of requirements to meet field tests under specified
operating conditions, nor does it relieve the vendor from responsibility of conformance to requirements in
any way whatsoever.
4.3.2 Hydrostatic Tests
4.3.2.1 Add the following sentence:
If leakage occurs during the hydrostatic test, then the test shall be repeated after repairs are completed.
4.4 Preparation for Shipment
4.4.6 Add the following new paragraph:
Vendor shall not ship the compressor package until the test data are approved.
