Roof Drain Installation Procedure & Details
- All roofs, shall be drained into a separate storm sewer system, or into a combined sewer system where a separate storm sewer system is not available, or to some other place of disposal satisfactory to Saudi Aramco.(UPC Para 1101.1 )
Exception: In the case of one and two family dwellings, storm water may be discharged on flat areas such as streets or lawns so long as the storm water shall flow away from the building and away from adjoining property, and shall not create a nuisance. “ - Rainwater piping placed within the interior of a building or run within a vent or shaft shall be of the materials listed below
a) Schedule 40 PVC DWV
b) Copper with DWV fittings
c) Cast iron with DWV fittings (UPC Para 1101.3). - Storm water shall not be drained into sewers intended for sanitary drainage only (UPC Para 1101.2)
- Roof areas of a building shall be drained by roof drains or gutters. (UPC 1101.11.2 )
- Where parapet walls or other construction extend above the roof and create areas where storm water would become trapped if the primary roof drainage system failed to provide sufficient drainage, an independent secondary roof drainage system consisting of scuppers, standpipes, or roof drains shall be provided.
- Overflow drains shall be the same size as the roof drains with the inlet flow line two (2) inches (51 mm) above the low point of the roof and shall be installed independent from the roof drains. (UPC Para1102.11.2)
- Where secondary roof drainage is provided by means of roof drains or standpipes, the secondary system shall be separate from the primary system and shall discharge independently at grade or other approved point of discharge.(UPC Para 1101.11.2.2)
- The elevation of the secondary inlets plus the required overflow head shall not exceed the maximum allowable water level on the roof.
(UPC Para 1101.11.2.3). - All roof drains and overflow drains, except those draining to hanging gutters, shall be equipped with strainers extending not less than four (4) inches (102mm) above the surface of the roof immediately adjacent to the drain. (UPC Para 1105.2).
- Strainers shall have a minimum of not less than one and one half (1-½) times the area of the conductor or leader to which the drain is connected. (UPC Para 1105.2).
- Connection between the roof and roof drains which pass through the roof and into the interior of the building shall be made watertight by the use of proper flashing material. (UPC Para 1105.4)
- Where lead flashing material is used, it shall be a minimum of four (4) pounds per square foot (19.5 kg/ m²). (UPC Para 1105.4.1)
- Where copper flashing material is used, it shall be a minimum of twelve (12) ounces per square foot (3.7kg/m²). (UPC Para 1105.4.2)
- Materials exposed within return air plenums shall be non combustible or limited combustible.
