1. Scope
American Petroleum Institute (API) standard 619, Rotary Type Positive Displacement Compressors for
Petroleum, Chemical, and Gas Industry Services, Third Edition, dated June 1997 is adopted as a SABIC
Engineering Standard (SES) with the following addendum.
2. General
Rotary positive displacement compressors manufactured and packaged to this standard shall comply with
API 619, Third Edition, except as modified herein or as set forth in Data Sheets, Project Specifications, or
the purchase order.
3. Addenda
The following section, subsection and paragraph numbers refer to API 619, Third Edition, June 1997.
1. Scope
Add the following sentence:
Packaged screw air compressors shall conform to SES G09-S02 and are not covered by this standard.

4. Basic Design
4.1 General
4.1.1 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
The equipment (including auxiliaries) covered by this standard shall be designed and constructed for a
minimum service life of 20 years and at least 5 years of uninterrupted operation. It is recognized that this is
a design criterion. Compressors shall be supplied by vendors qualified by experience in manufacturing the
proposed equipment. In order to qualify, vendor shall have manufactured, at the proposed point of
manufacture, at least two compressors of comparable flow rate, differential pressure, power rating, gas
handled and speed. These compressors shall have been in service and performing satisfactorily for at
least one year. Vendor shall provide, upon request, a detailed user list of compressors in service in similar
applications.

4.1.2 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Unless otherwise specified, the compressor vendor shall assume unit responsibility for all equipment and
all auxiliary systems included in the scope of the order.
4.1.12 Add the following sentence:
Motors, electrical components and electrical installation shall also conform to SES E06-S01, E06-S02,
E06-S03 and E19-S01.
4.1.13 Add the following sentences:
Unless otherwise specified , the maximum allowable sound pressure level for the compressor, its drive train
and accessories, shall be 85 dBA at 1 m. In-line silencers or equipment enclosures required to meet this
criteria shall be quoted as separate line items for SABIC’s consideration. Equipment noise control shall be
in accordance with SES S20-G01.
4.1.15 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Unless otherwise specified the equipment shall be suitable for installation outdoors without a roof, in the
weather and environmental conditions specified on the data sheet.
4.2 Pressure Casing
4.2.9 Add the following sentences:
Details of any proposed overlay or cladding shall be included in the vendor’s original proposal. Overlay or
cladding may not be used without specific approval of SABIC.
4.3 Casing Connections
4.3.4 Add the following sentence:
Casing drains shall be terminated with a flange and furnished with a block valve.
4.5 Rotating Elements
4.5.1 Rotors
4.5.1.1 Add the following sentences:
Rotors and shafts shall be of sufficient stiffness and material compatibility to prevent wear between the
rotor bodies and casing, and between gear timed rotor bodies, at the most unfavorable specified
conditions. Rotor bodies not integral with the shaft shall be securely fixed to the shaft, to prevent
unintended relative motion under any operating condition. Separate rotor bodies shall be fixed using keys
and high torque locknuts, or other methods specifically approved by SABIC.
4.5.1.3 Substitute the sentence as follows:
Reference to API 670 shall be replaced by SES G19-S01.
4.5.1.5 Substitute the sentence as follows:
Reference to API 671 shall be replaced by SES G12-S01.
4.6 Shaft Seals
4.6.1 General
4.6.1.4 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Labyrinth and restrictive ring type seals shall only be acceptable for air services. Mechanical contact type
seals or self acting gas seals shall be used for all process services. Liquid film type seals may only be used
with SABIC’s specific approval.
4.7 Dynamics
4.7.2 Torsional Analysis
4.7.2.5 The decision is as follows:
A torsional vibration analysis is required for all units furnished with a gearbox.

4.7.3 Vibration and Balance
4.7.3.3 The decision is as follows:
A residual unbalance check shall be performed in accordance with Appendix F for rotors operating at
speeds of 3600 rpm or higher.
4.7.3.4 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Reference to API 670 shall be replaced by SES G19-S01.
4.9 Bearing Housings
4.9.3 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Reference to API 670 shall be replaced by SES G19-S01.
4.9.4 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Reference to API 670 shall be replaced by SES G19-S01.
4.9.5 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Reference to API 670 shall be replaced by SES G19-S04.
4.10 Lube Oil and Seal Oil Systems
4.10.3 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Pressure lubrication systems shall conform to SES G03-S01.
4.10.5 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Reference to API 614 shall be replaced by SES G03-S01.
4.11 Materials
4.11.4.1 Add the following paragraphs:
The following non-destructive testing requirements shall apply for welding:
a. A minimum of 10 percent of butt welds in piping shall be examined in their entirety by radiography
b. As a minimum, spot radiography shall be required for longitudinal and circumferential butt welds in
pressure vessels, compressor casings, and other pressure retaining components other than piping
c. All junctions of circumferential and longitudinal butt welds shall be examined by radiography
d. Completed fillet welds in low alloy piping shall be examined by dye penetrant or magnetic particle
examination
4.12 Nameplates and Rotation Arrows
4.12.3 The decision is as follows:
SI units shall be used on equipment nameplates.
5. Accessories
5.1 Drivers
5.1.5 Substitute the first two sentences as follows:
Motor drives shall conform to SES E06-S01, E06-S02 or E06-S03 as applicable.
5.1.7 Modify the paragraph as follows:
References API 611 and 612 shall be replaced by SES G06-S01 and G06-S02.
5.1.8 Modify the paragraph as follows:
Gears shall also conform to SES G07-S01 or G07-S02.
5.2 Couplings and Guards
5.2.1 Add the following sentence:
Couplings shall be disc or diaphragm type.

5.2.2 Modify the sentence as follows:
Reference to API 671 shall be replaced by SES G12-S01.
5.4 Controls and Instrumentation
5.4.1 General
5.4.1.2 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Controls and instrumentation shall conform to SES G03-S01 and X01-S03. Wiring and electrical
components shall conform to SES E19-S01.
5.4.1.3 The decision is as follows:
SABIC will specify controls, instruments and control panel requirements in accordance with SES G03-S01.
5.4.3 Instrumentation
5.4.3.1 Tachometers
The decision is as follows:
Tachometers shall be furnished on all steam turbine driven units.
5.4.3.5 Vibration and Position Detectors
5.4.3.5.1 The decision is as follows:
Compressors with hydrodynamic bearings shall have non-contacting radial vibration and axial position
probes and transducers in accordance with SES G19-S01 and the data sheets.
5.4.3.5.2 Modify the sentence as follows:
Reference to API 670 shall be replaced by SES G19-S01.
5.5 Piping
5.5.1 General
5.5.1.1 Add the following sentences:
Lube oil and seal oil piping shall also conform to SES G03-S01. Process piping shall conform to
ASME B31.3 and other piping specifications as furnished by SABIC.
5.6 Intercoolers and Aftercoolers
5.6.3 Substitute the paragraph as follows:
Water cooled shell and tube intercoolers and aftercoolers shall be designed and constructed in accordance
with SES Q02-E01.
6. Inspection, Testing and Preparation for Shipment
6.1 General
6.1.1 The decision is as follows:
Inspection and testing requirements will be specified on data sheets.
6.2 Inspection
6.2.3 Mechanical Inspection
6.2.3.3 The decision is as follows:
SABIC will inspect for internal cleanliness before the piping or equipment is closed.
6.3 Testing
6.3.2 Hydrostatic Tests
6.3.2.1 Add the following sentence:
The shells of inline silencers shall be tested in accordance with the provisions of this paragraph.

6.4 Preparation for Shipment
6.4.8 The decision is as follows:
The fit-up and assembly of machine mounted piping, intercoolers and so forth shall be completed in the
vendor’s shop prior to shipment.

A separate technical data manual shall not be required. The data usually included in this manual shall
