SAES-L-105 Piping Line Classes

This standard outlines the minimum mandatory requirements for piping line classes data sheets for new piping systems used in oil and gas processing, refining, distribution, and utility services. The design of these piping systems must comply with either ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.4, or ASME B31.8 Codes.

The standard provides a set of basic Piping Line Classes that can be used as a starting point. However, for specific project requirements that are not covered by the basic line classes (such as unlisted materials, higher corrosion allowances, or modifications to base line classes), new line classes should be developed based on this standard.

Any unlisted line classes should be approved by the Piping Standards Committee Chairman. The relevant selected piping class(es) for a specific project should include the attached preamble section of this standard. This ensures that the specific project requirements are documented and approved.

General Requirements for Piping Line Classes

This part supplements the ASME B31.4/8 design Code and covers the applicable piping defined in SAES-L-100 for non-process facilities. It includes piping systems in pump stations, terminals, water treatment and water injection plants, bulk plants, air fueling terminals, tank farms, and wellhead piping. Flowlines, trunklines, transmission lines, cross-country pipelines, and sub-sea pipelines are not included in this part.

This part supplements the ASME B31.1/3 design Code and covers the applicable piping defined in SAES-L-100 for process facilities. It includes piping systems in steam generation plants, gas-oil separation plants (GOSPs), gas plants, natural gas liquid (NGL) plants, offshore platforms, refineries, and petrochemical plants.

This part covers utility and non-metallic piping for both process and non-process facilities.

When developing “Piping Line Classes” for new facilities or grass root plants, the latest revision of this standard should be used. However, for existing plants or tie-ins to existing piping facilities, the plant’s original specifications based on previous revisions of this standard or specific project’s “Piping Line Classes” can be used, provided they meet applicable code requirements and do not pose any safety hazards.

Design Piping Line Classes of SAES-L-105 PDF Download

In the design aspect, the following requirements should be considered:

General:

  • Piping designed according to the relevant ASME B31 Code specified in the individual line classes should meet the requirements of several standards, including SAES-L-100, SAES-L-108, SAES-L-109, SAES-L-110, SAES-L-310, SAES-L-410, SAES-L-610, SAES-L-620, and SAES-L-810.
  • Sanitary and drainage piping should meet the applicable requirements of SAES-S-010, SAES-S-020, SAES-S-030, and SAES-S-060.
  • Piping for fire water systems should meet the applicable requirements of SAES-B-017 and SAES-S-050.

Corrosion Allowance:

  • The corrosion allowance for piping should be determined based on the criteria specified in SAES-L-133 and should meet the allowance specified in the facility material selection diagram(s).

Pipe:

  • Pipe sizes should comply with the limitations specified in either SAES-L-310 or SAES-L-410.

Pipe Joints and Components:

  • Limitations on pipe joints and components should adhere to the guidelines specified in SAES-L-110.
  • Selection of flanges, gaskets, bolts, and nuts should be done in accordance with SAES-L-109.

Valves:

  • The selection of valve types and valve trims should be based on the individual line classes, considering the service conditions and limitations outlined in SAES-L-108.

Branch Connection:

  • Branch connections for metallic piping in new construction should be made according to the guidelines provided in SAES-L-110.
