SAES-L-108SAES-L-108 selection of Valves
This standard focuses on the limitations associated with the selection of valves classified under Saudi Aramco Materials System (SAMS) Class 04. The valves included within this classification are typically ball, butterfly, check, choke, diaphragm, gate, globe, needle, and plug valves. These valves are used for various purposes such as on-off operations, manual control service, or preventing reverse flow.
However, there are certain exclusions specified in this standard: a) Control valves, safety-relief valves, relief valves, surge relief valves, solenoid valves, pilot valves, and other valves classified under SAMS Class 34 are not covered. b) Applications involving flues and chimneys, air conditioning, and ventilation ducts are also excluded. c) Drilling and wellhead valves classified under SAMS Class 45 are not within the scope of this standard.
In cases where applicable, this standard serves as a supplement to the requirements of ASME B31, the Code for Pressure Piping.
General Notes about Selection of Valves
Procurement and selection of valves should adhere to the following guidelines:
- Valves should be purchased from approved manufacturers listed in SAES-L-102. If a valve needs to be purchased from a manufacturer not listed in the document, strict provisions provided therein must be followed.
- The selection of valves should generally be limited to the materials, types, and sizes listed in SAMS Class 04. However, if a suitable valve is not listed, alternatives can be considered.
- Requisitions for valves should include the relevant Saudi Aramco Materials System Specifications (SAMSS) listed in Section 3 of the standard.
- In cases where a valve similar to one covered by an SAMSS needs to be purchased but with specific design, construction, materials, or performance characteristics, the SAMSS should be included in the purchase requisition along with the required modifications. These modifications must comply with all other Mandatory Saudi Aramco Engineering Requirements.
- Valve requisitions, except for API SPEC 6A 10000 psi valves 2-1/16 inch and larger, should reference 04-SAMSS-035 (General Requirements for Valves) and 04-SAMSS-048 (Valve Inspection & Testing Requirements).
- A Valve Data Sheet (Form 6233-1-ENG) should be filled out and attached to every non-SAMS Class 04 valve purchase requisition.
Regarding field tests, the following points should be noted:
- The testing location should be specified by the proponent.
- For new valves designated for isolation service, a high-pressure hydrostatic seat test should be conducted upon the proponent’s request before installation in the line.
- Flare system valves should undergo a low-pressure pneumatic seat test at 35 kPa (5 psig) instead of the high-pressure hydrostatic seat test.
- Buttweld and socketweld end valves in nominal pipe size (NPS) 2 inches and smaller are exempt from the field testing requirements.
- Test procedures, pressures, durations, and leakage acceptance criteria should be in accordance with the original valve purchase specifications. Resilient (soft) seated isolation valves should have zero leakage.
- The use of ANSI FCI 70.2 to specify seat leakage criteria is not permitted without specific approval from the Chairman of the Valves Standards Committee.
Trim material includes various components of the valve that come into contact with the service fluid, such as the stem, body and closure seating surfaces, bushings, pins, springs, guides, and other small parts.
General Design limitation of Valves for SAES-L-108 PDF Download
In relation to bonnets/covers and end connections, the following requirements apply:
Bonnet/Cover:
- Pressure seal bonnet valves should only be used in steam or clean non-corrosive services. In other services, they are permitted if the bonnet sealing area of the body is inlayed with an 18-8 material or higher alloy suitable for the service.
- Bonnets retained by split rings and sealed with an O-ring or seal-welded membrane can only be used with approval from the Chairman of the Valves Standards Committee.
- The use of welded bonnet valves in hydrocarbon services should be limited to NPS 4 inch and smaller, subject to approval by the Manager of the responsible operating department.
- Screwed bonnet and screwed body valves should not be used in hydrocarbon or hazardous material services unless the bonnets and body end connections are tack welded to the body or provided with a locking pin.
- Straight-thru union body check valves should only be used in piping systems where pipe unions are allowed.
- Union bonnet valves should not be used in hydrocarbon or hazardous material services.
End Connections:
- The requirements of SAES-L-110 are applicable to all valves.
- Integral flanged valve bodies with tapped bolt holes should not be used unless specifically approved by the Proponent and the Chairman of the Valves Standards Committee. This requirement does not apply to lug type valves.
- Upon request by the proponent, critical valves, welding end valves, and other valves that cannot be easily removed from the line (e.g., in restrained pipelines) with NPS 8 inch and larger, should be of a type that is repairable in the line (top-entry) if specifically approved by the Chairman of the Valves Standards Committee.
Valves with soft seats for SAES-L-108 PDF Download:
- Valves with soft seats may not necessarily follow the pressure/temperature relationships specified in ASME B16.5 or other industry standards at temperatures above 38°C.
- When the pressure-temperature ratings for higher temperatures have not been specified by the relevant Saudi Aramco Materials System Specifications (SAMSS) or the Purchase Order, the specific Vendor’s literature should be consulted.
Minimum body rating for valves in hydrocarbon services:
- In hydrocarbon services, the minimum body rating for threaded and socketweld end valves with NPS 2 inch and smaller should be equivalent to API STD 602 Class 800.
Regarding valve sizes, the following requirements apply:
- Valves shall be subject to the same size limitations specified for pipes in SAES-L-136.
Regarding stem packing:
- Isolation valves with NPS 3 inch and larger in hydrocarbon services should not be equipped with pure polymer/elastomer stem packing or stem seals, unless the valves have been qualified as fire-safe. However, there may be exceptions allowed by an approved Saudi Aramco Materials System Specification (SAMSS).
Regarding actuators:
The need for power actuation:
- The necessity of power actuation for all valves with NPS 12 inch and larger, regardless of pressure classes, should be reviewed with the responsible operating organization.
Chainwheel operation:
- Chainwheel operation should not be provided for emergency isolation valves or valves with a threaded body connection.
